Primera edición de la primera gran flora española escrita por un español, José Quer y Martínez (1695-1764) médico y botánico que viajó extensamente por España, Francia, Italia y el norte de África recopilando multitud de semillas y plantas vivas con las que estableció un primitivo Jardín Botánico en Madrid y más tarde, a instancias de Fernando VI, el Real Jardín Botánico. En 1762 emprendió la publicación de su Flora española o historia de las plantas que se crían en España, con criterios tournefortianos, lo que le llevó a enfrentarse a Carlos Linneo. Sólo alcanzó a publicar cuatro volúmenes en vida, quedando la obra inconclusa a su muerte; fue terminada por Casimiro Gómez Ortega, uno de sus sucesores. Tal y como nos dice Palau, su interés científico no es muy grande por no aportar datos nuevos, pero sí tiene gran importancia como trabajo recopilatorio, campo en el que hasta entones no había sido igualado, y es por ello libro muy apreciado.
