Les critiques contemporains considéraient Lenoir comme le poète le plus important de son temps. Aussi forma-t-on, peu après sa mort, le projet d'une édition de ses ?uvres, comme l'atteste Henri-Raymond Casgrain en 1863. Par la suite, son souvenir s'estompa et avec lui le projet d'une édition. En 1916, la publication d'une vingtaine de poèmes de Joseph Lenoir, sous le titre Poèmes épars, permit à une nouvelle génération d'apprécier les qualités littéraires de cet écrivain, dont la sobriété de l'expression et l'élégance de la prosodie contrastent heureusement avec la littérature de l'époque.
