Softcover. Condition: Good. 1. Product Description Hildy's narrative of three misfits' struggle to survive junior high. When she finds Scotty Dwyer, Vanderville's only dwarf, and Harrison Jakove, class wimp, their lives change forever. It's a sad and funny story of being different, love and sacrifice. From the Author When I wrote FREAKs I wanted to make it real. The narrator Hildy's voice, along with the others, comes from years of listening to the thousands of kids who passed through my classes. Although the characters are fictional, they became real people, and my daughter, who was in 9th Grade when I started writing, regarded them as her friends. She laughed and cried as they took FREAKs to places I never planned. If there is a message here, it is one of love. I just hope you love reading my book as much as I loved writing it. About the Author Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A., Joseph E. Scalia moved to Long Island, where he taught English and Creative Writing for 33 years. Always a writer himself, he started by scribbling what he calls "terrible rhyming poems on bathroom walls." Over the years he has written three novels, a volume of short stories, countless humorous essays, and a filing cabinet full of poetry, much of which has found its way into print on paper. The idea for FREAKs came to him one morning in a Study Hall class, when he met Carol, the limping 7th Grader who would become the model for Hildy. Similarly, all the other characters in FREAKs have been drawn from his long teaching experience. Today he lives in Farmingdale with his cat Silvier.
