The text block is in fine condition, with no marks, tears, or dog-ears. Not a library book or remainder. No bookplate or signature of previous owner. The book is bowed. The wraps are in good condition (tiny tear at top of spine). 7 ¼ x 4 ¼, 187 pages, 10 ounces XX [From the back cover] In the long chronicle of explorers of the New World, Réne Robert Cavelier, Sieur de la Salle (1643-1687) stands out. Yet the character and career behind the name is an enigma. School children for generations have memorized the name in their lists of great explorers, yet they cannot say what areas he explored. Even professional historians find it difficult to establish with any certainty what paths he broke into the wilderness. To Louis XIV of France and the courtiers: of Versailles, La Salle was a man of grand schemes and plans worthy of their assistance, yet few were ever sure that they fully understood exactly what he intended, and, in the end, when all his efforts had failed, they dismissed him as a dreamer at best and an imposter at worst. Among those followers who accompanied him through the forests of the New World, there were some from whom La Salle evoked a loyalty unsurpassed; but there were others from whom he evoked only hatred, fear, and finally the courage to murder him and leave his mutilated body in a Texas thicket (from the Introduction by Darrett B. Rutman, University of Minnesota).
