Les auteurs, Jules Périn et Paul Cagé, n'avaient pas la prétention de rédiger une histoire complète des ""Trois villes soeurs"", mais simplement de donner l'origine des monuments, d'expliquer les noms de rues, de révéler le passé des lieux pittoresques, de faire revivre les personnages célèbres, enfants de la région. Ainsi Le Tréport, l'un des ports les plus considérables de la Manche au XIIIe siècle. Ainsi Mers, dont le village primitif disparut dans les flots avec la falaise, en 1370. Ainsi Eu, place importante à l'époque gallo-romaine, véritable capitale au XIe siècle, à l'industrie et au commerce prospères trois siècles plus tard. On trouve également dans cet ouvrage l'histoire du comté d'Eu, érigé au Xe siècle, acquis en 1660 par la Grande Mademoiselle, qui fit décorer le château avec une magnificence inconnue auparavant et vivifia le pays par ses institutions de bienfaisance. Rédigé à l'intention des ""visiteurs de l'été (.) pour les diriger dans leurs excursions », ce livre concerne également les habitants de toute la région, qui revivront avec plaisir le passé de leurs ancêtres et retrouveront les traces de monuments aujourd'hui disparus.
