In 1874, at the age of 25, McGillycuddy went West as a surgeon and engineer with a boundary survey party in Montana. Eventually making his way to the Black Hills, McGillycuddy served as a surgeon during the Sioux Wars of 1876 and was head of the Pine Ridge Agency, the largest of all Indian agencies with 9,000 Sioux Indians. McGillycuddy was present at Ft. Robinson for the killings of California Joe and Crazy Horse. Much first-hand information about Custer, Red Cloud, Sitting Bull, Calamity Jane, Wild Bill Hickok, Crook, etc. "The Indian agent at the Pine Ridge Reservation from 1879 to1886, Dr. McGillycuddy met many famous characters of the West, and acted as a negotiator during the Wounded Knee affair. The author, the doctor's second wife Julia, thells much of Custer, Sitting Bull, Spotted Tail, the killing of Crazy Horse, and government relations with the Indians, as it was told to her by Dr. McGillycuddy."--O'Keefe 1512.
