McCarthy (1830-1912), one of the great Victorian scholars, a novelist and historian, who also had a long political career. His "History of Our Own Times" is a classic. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition, quite a scarce…book in the McCarthy canon. No publication date, but per Copac and OCLC, ackowledged to be 1883. Held by only one institution in the USA and six in the UK; not among the almost 100 McCarthy titles held by the Library of Congress. Green cloth binding with black lettering. Clean text; 127 pages plus a 32-page catalog of Chattus offerings as of December 1882. Three small stampings indicate the copy was once held in Scotland. This copy has been SIGNED & INSCRIBED by the Author on the half-title. Moderate soil; the book is holding well, but Quercus would recommend some reinforcement to preserve this important artifact. In an archival plastic protector. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Inscribed By Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket.

Among his many works was a biography of William Gladstone, who is mentioned in this letter. William Rideing (1853-1918) was an American author who wrote for journals and p…eriodicals on various subjects. McCarthy writes: "Sept 13, '92 Dear Mr. Rideing I am very glad to hear of your safe arrival after your stormy passage. I am glad too to hear that you have got home 'bringing your sheaves with you' in the shape of contributions from Mr. Gladstone and Mr. Balfour. I think you have accompished a triumph." He goes on to thank him for partial payment for his Reminiscences and sends his regards to Mrs. Rideing. Bi-fold measuring 4.5 x 7 inches. A lengthy autograph letter signed Justin McCarthy: I feel quite sure that I may readily undertake to give my signature to any literary announcement issued by Dr. Albert Ellery Bergh and the Colonial Press. I should be glad however to see each announcement before it goes forth as I might perhaps have some addition or alteration to suggest. I may say that my agreement with Mr. Bergh was that I should act as an advising member of the Library Committee for the publication of The Worlds Great Classics for which a fee of one hundred guineas was to be paid to me. That fee I have long since received and acknowledged. It was also understood that I might be asked to write an introduction for one of the volumes at a separate fee. My services therefore is advice, suggestion, and other such cooperation have been paid for in advance by the Colonial Press. I shall be happy at all times to receive any communications or to offer any advice or lend any help in connection with your noble literary enterprise. But I fear there is not the remotest chance of my being anywhere near Philadelphia on the 20th of January, and so I cant avail myself of your kindness. The letter, penned in blue ink, is in fine condition overall There is a slight chip to the upper left corner that affects nothing.
