Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Folio. 468 p. Latin and Greek. Bound in contemporary full leather. Handsome binding. Gilt lettering on spine. 6 raised bands. Beautifully restored. Red and gold leather spine label. Rebacked. Good binding and cover. Bookplate of Sir John Chester, 6th Baronet on inside board. Clean, unmarked pages with tanning. Contents: The First Apology addressed to Antoninus Pius, his sons, and the Roman Senate; Second Apology of Justin Martyr addressed to the Roman Senate; Dialogue with Trypho. Justin Martyr, also known as Saint Justin, was an early Christian apologist, and is regarded as the foremost interpreter of the theory of the Logos in the 2nd century. Most of his works are lost, but two apologies and a dialogue did survive. The First Apology, his most well known text, passionately defends the morality of the Christian life, and provides various ethical and philosophical arguments to convince the Roman emperor, Antoninus, to abandon the persecution of the fledgling sect. Further, he also makes the theologically-innovative suggestion that the seeds of Christianity actually predated Christ's incarnation. In the Dialogue with Trypho, after an introductory section, Justin undertakes to show that Christianity is the new law for all men. In this work, Justin associated Satan with the Serpent that induced the fall of Adam and Eve in Genesis. He was the first interpreter of the Scripture to make this association.

Hardback. Condition: New.
