"Hiroshima's Shadow is easily the best overview of the most debated event in our stormy history and, best of all, every voice is heard." ~(Gore Vidal) ~ "The atomic bombing of Japan powerfully illustrates the dictum of William Faulkner that the past is never dead, it is not even past. This superb collection of contemporary documents and subsequent commentary and debate will be invaluable for all those who want to learn and teach about the many meanings of the central, terrifying political! military cultural event of this century." ~ (Gaddis Smith, Larned Professor of History, Yale University.) "Hiroshima's Shadow is a deeply impressive book. It is evident that the editors' intention is to present as diverse a perspective as possible on the atomic bombings in as factually accurate and interpretively plausible frameworks as possible. This volume accomplishes the task admirably ~ The America that comes through in these pages is a society that is open to free inquiry, that dares to question officially sanctioned views of the past, and that sets high standards of scholarly excellence. "~ (Akint Iriye, Professor of Historv, Harvard University ). "In 37 years of military service, which included extensive involvement in planning and training for nuclear war, I was impelled to conclude that nothing could ever justify using these barbaric indiscriminate devices for any military purpose. Hiroshima's Shadow is the ultimate confirmation of the truth that no civilized nation could ever be exonerated from crimes against humanity if it threatened or resorted to the use of nuclear explosives in warfare. Because there is only one way to insure that atom bombs never fall again, this book provides a compelling case for the abolition of all nuclear weapons forever. "~ (Eugene J. Carroll, Jr., Rear Admiral US Navy (Ret.) ). READERS OF THIS COLLECTION of essays will be compelled to reevaluate their understanding of the history and politics underlying the decision to use atomic weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Kai Bird and Lawrence Lifschultz draw together a distinguished group of international historians and writers (including six Nobel Prize recipients) whose careful research has pierced the rationales for the atomic bombing presented by the Truman administration following the annihilation of the civilian populations in both cities. Hiroshima's Shadow carefully retraces the steps leading to the decision to use atomic weapons. Important elements of this research became an integral part of the planned 1995 Enola Gay exhibit at the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum. The exhibit was first censored and then ultimately canceled despite the condemnation of the Organization of American Historians. Hiroshima's Sbadow contains essays and memoirs by Gar Alperovitz, Barton Bernstein, Wilfred Burchett, Albert Camus, Norman Cousins, John Dower, Albert Einstein, Paul Fussell, Mahatma Gandhi, William Lanouette, Mary McCarthy, Dwight Macdonald, Lewis Mumford, Reinhold Niebuhr, Kenzaburo Oe, John Rawls, Bertrand Russell, Murray Sayle, Martin Sherwin, and Henry Stimson, among others.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Printing [Stated]. lxxvii, [1], 584, [2] pages. Illustrations. Notes. Contributors, Select Bibliography. Acknowledgments. Preface by Dr. Joseph Rotblat, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. This is a compilation of Writings on the Denial of History and the Smithsonian Co…ntroversy. Ex-library with usual library markings. DJ is in a plastic sleeve taped to boards. Kai Bird (born September 2, 1951) is an American author and columnist, best known for his biographies of political figures. He won a Pulitzer Prize for American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Lawrence Lifschultz is an esteemed international journalist and author. Among the contributors are: Gar Alperovitz, Wilfred Burchett, P.M.S. Blackett, Paul Fussell, Lewis Mumford, Mike Wallace, and John Dower. An exhaustive, controversial, and moving volume that has its origins in the Smithsonian Institution's cancellation of a planned exhibition in 1994-95 of the Enola Gay, the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The book moves along two paths: a painstaking analysis of how and why the bomb came to be used, and a provocative deliberation on what the editors term the "pathology of denial" in the US surrounding our use of the bomb. The first part of the book offers selections by present-day historians. The second part is devoted to essays written shortly after the bombing. Part three focuses on the Smithsonian controversy itself. Part four presents chilling first-person accounts of the day Hiroshima died. The final part is devoted to historical documents, memos, and diary entries of those who participated in the decision to use the bomb and also public statements pleading against this decision.
