paperback. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Paperback. Condition: Good. Communities of Sense argues for a new understanding of the relation between politics and aesthetics in todays globalized and image-saturated world. Established and emerging scholars of art and culture draw on Jacques RanciEres theorization of democratic politics to suggest that aesthetics, traditionally defined as the science of the sensible, is not a depoliticized discourse or theory of art, but instead part of a historically specific organization of social roles and communality. Rather than formulating aesthetics as the Other to politics, the contributors show that aesthetics and politics are mutually implicated in the construction of communities of visibility and sensation through which political orders emerge. The first of the collections three sections explicitly examines the links between aesthetics and social and political experience. Here a new essay by RanciEre posits art as a key site where disagreement can be staged in order to produce new communities of sense. In the second section, contributors investigate how sense was constructed in the past by the European avant-garde and how it is mobilized in todays global visual and political culture. Exploring the viability of various models of artistic and political critique in the context of globalization, the authors of the essays in the volumes final section suggest a shift from identity politics and preconstituted collectivities toward processes of identification and disidentification. Topics discussed in the volume vary from digital architecture to a makeshift museum in a Paris suburb, and from romantic art theory in the wake of Hegel to the history of the group-subject in political art and performance since 1968. An interview with Etienne Balibar rounds out the collection. Contributors. Emily Apter, Etienne Balibar, Carlos Basualdo, T. J. Demos, Rachel Haidu, Beth Hinderliter, David Joselit, William Kaizen, Ranjanna Khanna, Reinaldo Laddaga, Vered Maimon, Jaleh Mansoor, Reinhold Martin, Seth McCormick, Yates McKee, Alexander Potts, Jacques RanciEre, Toni Ross. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Since the 1960s, Dan Graham's heterogeneous practice has touched on suchdisparate subjects as tract housing, the Shakers, punk music, and architecturaltheory; he has made videos, architectural models, closed-circuit installations, andglass pavilions. Graham, who came of age during the emergence of earth art, minimalism, and conceptualism, has situated his work on the borders between thesedifferent strains of contemporary practice. Although varying widely in subject andmedium, Graham's artwork and writings display a consistent interest inspectatorship, public-private relationships, and the constructed environment.Graham's extensive writings on his own work (collected in Rock My Religion andTwo-Way Mirror Power, both published by the MIT Press) have made him, by default, the primary interpreter of his own art. This October Files volume provides acounterweight, gathering key texts by critics and theorists that offer alternativeaccounts of Graham's art. The essays span thirty years and include hard-to-findtexts from exhibition catalogs and journals. The authors include such distinguishedtheorists, critics, and artists as Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, Beatriz Colomina, Thierryde Duve, and Jeff Wall. A collection of essayson a key figure in postminimalist art, with texts spanning thirty years.

Paperback. Condition: New. Rainer Ganahl (illustrator). For more than 10 years, Rainer Ganahl has been engaged in a subtle exploration of the points of overlap of art and learning, using a variety of media including photographs, videos, books, wall texts, and tapestries. Much of Ganahl's work falls into the following categories: Libraries, collections of scholarly books, intended to be perused by gallery visitors; Seminars and Lectures, where he attends and photographs seminars and lectures by leading scholars; Readings, where he photographs and/or videotapes invited participants as they analyze theoretical texts with him; Studies, portraits of himself as a learning machine, documenting his efforts to study new languages; and Dialogs, either interviews or collaborations outside educational institutions. Ganahl has had numerous solo exhibitions in Europe and New York and was selected as one of three Austrian representatives to the Venice Biennale in 1999. William Kaizen, a Columbia University doctoral candidate in art history, is the curator of The Wallach Art Gallery (3230) exhibition and primary author of the exhibition catalogue, which provides a comprehensive overview and a scholarly exploration of the artist's work. In her introduction to the catalogue, Professor Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak discusses her personal connection to Ganahl. She sees in his work an answer to Marx's question, "Who will educate the educators?"Kaizen's essay takes up the politics of Rainer Ganahl's claim that education is art's "abhorred other" and discusses the means through which the artist creates possibilities for both art and knowledge production. A color plate section with commentary by the artist includes more than 400 images that document Ganahl's varied artistic practices during the past decade. Two additional contributions by the artist-"Marx and again Marx: Antonio Negri interviewed by Rainer Ganahl" and "A Portable Library for Columbia University"-expand the understanding of his practice.
