Repräsentatives Widmungsporträt des Professors Carl Damian Schroff, von "seinen dankbaren Schülern" 1838 in Auftrag gegeben, zur Ehrung seiner Lehrtätigkeit an der Wiener Universität und zur Verbreitung in akademischen Kreisen. Der Bildaufbau zeigt Schroff als ruhig sitzende Halbfigur vor neutralem Hintergrund; die gefalteten Hände und der geschlossene, dunkle Rock verleihen dem Bildnis Strenge und Konzentration. Die schlichte bürgerliche Kleidung ohne Insignien unterstreicht seine Rolle als universitärer Lehrer und Forscher, nicht als Hofbeamter. Die lange, im Druck gesetzte Legende mit Nennung seiner Grade und Ämter und dem Widmungshinweis verankert das Blatt eindeutig im Kontext studentischer Verehrung. Karl Damian von Schroff (12.9.1802 Kratzau - 20.3.1887 Graz) studierte Medizin in Prag, wurde 1828 zum Dr. med. promoviert und war zunächst Sekundar- und Primararzt in Prag, u.a. Leiter der dortigen Irrenanstalt. Ab 1830 lehrte er in Olmütz Theoretische Medizin für Wundärzte; 1835 folgte er einem Ruf an die Universität Wien, wo er über Jahrzehnte Theoretische Medizin, später Allgemeine Pathologie und Pharmakologie lehrte. 1849 übernahm er die neu geschaffene Professur für Allgemeine Pathologie und Pharmakologie und richtete ein modernes pharmakologisches Institut ein; seine Lehrbücher zur Pharmakognosie und Pharmakologie sowie seine Mitarbeit an der 5. Ausgabe der Österreichischen Pharmakopöe begründeten seinen Ruf als führender Pharmakologe der Wiener Schule. Schroff galt als wichtiger Vertreter der naturwissenschaftlich orientierten Wiener Medizinischen Schule; er war Dekan der Medizinischen Fakultät (1850/51), Rektor der Universität Wien (1856/57) und Mitglied mehrerer zentraler Gremien wie Ständiger Medizinalkommission, Unterrichtsrat und Oberster Sanitätsrat. Zeitgenossen würdigten ihn als Neuerer der Pharmakologie und als einflussreichen akademischen Lehrer, dessen Institut zahlreiche spätere Pharmakologen prägte.
