Schon Paracelsus empfahl Johanniskraut zur Behandlung von Depressionen, Melancholie und Übererregbarkeit. Pflanzliche Arzneimittel spielten in der medikamentösen Therapie der Neuzeit jedoch lange keine oder allenfalls nur eine Außenseiterrolle.
