Jahrhunderts v. Anlass war eine Ausstellung in den Räumen des Löwenbräu-Areals in Zürich, deren Dokumentation nun als Katalog vorliegt. In seiner einfallsreichen und aufwändigen Gestaltung hebt er sich in auffällig positiver Weise von herkömmlichen Ausstellungskatalogen ab. Mit den raumgreifenden, multimedialen Installationen von Bruce Nauman, Barbara Kruger und Alfredo Jaar haben die Ausstellungsmacher das Publikum auf ein bislang noch wenig vertrautes Terrain gelockt -- mit großem Erfolg wie sich herausstellte, denn die Resonanz der kunstinteressierten Öffentlichkeit war überwältigend. Grund genug, sehr unterschiedliche Ansätze, aber auch Gemeinsamkeiten der Künstler näher zu beleuchten und in das visuelle Katalogkonzept von Nauman. Kruger. Jaar zu integrieren. Zwischen den Einbanddeckeln aus dicker grauer Industriepappe, mit Lochmuster perforiert und dezenter Namensprägung der drei Künstler versehen, warten rund 135 Seiten darauf, entdeckt zu werden. Essays und Abbildungen laden zu einer anregenden, lebendigen Exkursion ein -- zur Vertiefung der Eindrücke des Ausstellungsbesuches oder zwecks erster Orientierung und Annäherung an diese ungewöhnliche Kunstrichtung. "Kunst soll einen moralischen Wert, eine moralische Haltung, einen Standpunkt haben", ist die Maxime Bruce Naumans, der -- wie Barbara Kruger und Alfredo Jaar -- in seinen Installationen die verschiedenartigen Kombinationen von Bild und Text erkundet, um gesellschaftliche Phänomene auszuloten. Davon künden seine Neonschriftzüge, deren pulsierendes Blinken die inhaltliche Bedeutung der Worte in den Hintergrund treten lässt und ihnen in ihrer Eindringlichkeit neuartige Verbindungen und Bedeutungen zuweist (Good Boy Bad Boy, 1986). Um diese Wahrnehmungen für den Betrachter nachvollziehbar zu machen, sind im Katalog sämtliche Textkombinationen in Texten und Fotoserien reproduziert. Wie Nauman arbeitet auch Barbara Kruger mit einer Überforderung des Rezipienten, doch wo es Nauman eher um assoziative Erfahrungsprozesse geht, möchte sie provozieren, um gewohnte Wahrnehmungs- und Denkstrukturen zu hinterfragen. Der akustische Frontalbeschuss des Publikums durch ihre Multimediainstallation Power/ Pleasure/ Desire/ Disgust von 1997 wird durch ein raffiniertes Lay-out von Textbausteinen und Standfotografien aus dem Videofilm simuliert. Der 1956 in Santiago de Chile geborene Alfredo Jaar setzt sich in seinen Werken mit der Diskrepanz zwischen Erster und Dritter Welt auseinander. Über die Text- und Bildebene hinaus spielen Architektur und räumliche Inszenierungen eine bedeutende Rolle in seinen Arbeiten. In der Installation The Eyes of Gutete Emerita schickt Alfredo Jaar den Betrachter durch ein Ambiente des Schreckens und konfrontiert ihn mit dem Ruandakonflikt, in dem sich kollektive Gewalt mit individueller verbindet und damit bei jedem Einzelnen Betroffenheit auslöst. Die Gliederung des Buches Nauman. Kruger. Jaar ist ebenso klar wie spielerisch durchgeführt. Die Auswahl unterschiedlicher Papierarten und -formate führt durch das Buch wie Piktogramme in einen öffentlichen Raum -- konsequente Umsetzung eines Themas, das ohnehin um räumliche Konzepte kreist. Jedem Künstleressay wurde eine spezielle Oberflächenstruktur zugewiesen, die einen hohen Wiedererkennungswert einschließt. Die hochwertigen Farbabbildungen sind auf schwerem Kunstdruckpapier gedruckt. Mit Nauman. Kruger. Jaar ist es den Herausgebern Eva Keller und Regula Malin und dem Schweizer Scalo Verlag gelungen, nicht nur einen inhaltlich anspruchsvollen Ausstellungskatalog zu kreieren, sondern auch einen wichtigen ästhetischen Beitrag zu Gestaltung und Erhalt einer nahezu in Vergessenheit.

Born into a peasant family, NIKO PIROSMANI (1862 - 1918) arrived in Tbilisi in 1870. Painting portraits and tavern signs for room and board, he came to the attention of the Georgian and Russian avant-garde in 1912, who presented him a year later as the 'Rousseau of the East' in the Moscow exhibition Mischén alongside works of Natalia Goncharova, Mikhail Larionov, Kazimir Malevich and Marc Chagall. Pirosmani was a master of concentration and a storyteller. As expertly explained in the catalogue by a selection of Georgian art historians, he was a unique artist, a contradictory figure and an important part of the art scene in Tbilisi, then considered the 'Paris of the East.' Born into a peasant family, NIKO PIROSMANI (1862 - 1918) arrived in Tbilisi in 1870. Painting portraits and tavern signs for room and board, he came to the attention of the Georgian and Russian avant-garde in 1912, who presented him a year later as the 'Rousseau of the East' in the Moscow exhibition Mischén alongside works of Natalia Goncharova, Mikhail Larionov, Kazimir Malevich and Marc Chagall. An exhibition in Paris was planned, yet never to happen due to the First World War. Pirosmani died impoverished in 1918. Today he is Georgia's most celebrated artist. 200 pp. Englisch.
