This monograph traces the work of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (SPG) in support of elementary education in the province of New York. The focus is primarily on SPG descriptions of its work, but also includes evidence of other schools within the province derived from SPG missionary reports, which contain useful information on the state of education in the province. The geographical spread of the societies support is covered, as is the origins of the SPG, the influence of pre-existing religious societies and of Dr. Thomas Bray in particular, later founder of the Associates of Dr. Bray. The work of the SPG in England and Wales is described, in particular the society's involvement in the foundation of charity schools and the circulation of religious texts. The book also traces the societies provision of education for African Americans through its support of the Bray Associates. Whilst the majority of schoolmasters were recruited within the colonies, the society did employ masters from Britain and these were generally paid higher salaries. The book includes a detailed account of the societies support of schools across the province and the criteria by which they made funding decisions.
