First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Volume one ONLY. This work of Christian theology argues the New Testament's message must be re-interpreted for a modern audience through a method called demythologization. He believed the original New Testament writers used mythological language and concepts that are no longer relevant or comprehensible to contemporary people. Bultmann sought to remove these elements to uncover the core, existential message of the New Testament: the call to faith and a new existence in response to the Word of God as proclaimed in Jesus Christ. Bound in dark hunter green cloth, covers are plain with faded gilt lettering on the spine. This first edition bears Scribner's first edition "A" on the copyright page. In two parts: 1) Presuppositions and Motifs of New Testament Theology and 2) The Theology of Paul. Also includes a table of abbreviations and bibliographies. ix, 366 pp. CONDITION: VG with moderate shelfware. Lettering on the spine is faded. Unmarked except for previous owner's name written on the front flyleaf. Leaves have lightly toned yet with minimal foxing, predominantly within the endpapers. A nice, solid copy. Full refund if not satisfied.

Pamphlet. 50-55 p.; 22.5 cm. Reprinted from Vanderbilt studies in the humanities, vol. 1. `It is generally dated A.D. 130-140. Both internal evidence and ecclesiastical tradition indicate Rome as the place of writing. But Martin Dibelius has shown in his remarkable commentary to the book [Der Hirt des Hermas, 1923] that the materials used in this longest of the works known as Apostolic Fathers had a heterogeneous pre-history. This little study is intended as a footnote to Dibelius' commentary and an homage to him.' (p. 50) -- `The style of the whole book is marked by dreary pedantry and wordy repetition. But here, for the parable itself, this lax style gives way to a highly disciplined one, as indicated by the letters A B C C' B' A' and the numerals 1-4, both chiastically arranged. In the rest of this Parable there are other occurrences of this scheme, but none have been detected elsewhere in the book. It is scarcely conceivable that the inartistic author of the whole work is responsible for this composition; he must have taken it over already formed.' (p. 51) -- `Does the recognition that Parable II is talking of an arbustum help localize it? Indeed it does: the arbustum was apparently confined to Italy--and the elm-arbustum to central Italy.' (p. 54) -- `Literary evidence points toward Jewish authorship. Botanical data indicate the north Mediterranean littoral. Agricultural information points strongly to the central Italian provinces. We postulate a Jew of the diaspora, probably a resident of central Italy, as the originator of this parable.' (p. 55) Good, stapled, in lt. edgeworn orig. azure wrapper.
