338 pp.; 23.8 x 16 cm.; sewn bound; black-and-white; edition size unknown; unsigned and unnumbered; offset-printed "Fred W. McDarrah - for the past twenty-five years the picture editor of The Village Voice - was present, camera in hand, when the Beats first came east to Greenwich Village. Kerouac and Friends is the definitive photographic record of that period of American literary history. Along with his own remarkable photographs, McDarrah has gathered written documents as well: the writings of some of America's greatest critics, journalists, and historians on the Beat Generation. Here is John Clellon Holmes with the first definition of the term "beat", Kenneth Rexroth on jazz and poetry, Diana Trilling, John Ciardi, Seymour Krim, and even an angry denunciation of the Beats and their work by Norman Podhoretz. All of the great names of the generation are here - those who have endured like Mailer, Ginsberg, Corso, Ferlinghetti, Baraka, Silverstein, Baldwin, and those now only dimly remembered as part of the world the Beats created. The photos depict a Greenwich Village that is no more : quaint folk dancing in Washington Square Park, the Cafe Bizarre, the Eighth Street Bookshop, and Charlie Mingus and Kenneth Patchen doing a jazz and poetry recital at the Living Theater. These photographs - more than 190 in all - and the texts that accompany them form at once an important historical document and a nostalgic look back at a special time in the history of American life and letters." -- publisher's statement. Very Good. Light wear to dust-jacket including scratching and original pricing sticker. Contents clean and unmarked. The Roman Road was taken from his book The Golden Age and printed as a Christmas keepsake for friends of the Marchbank Press. Designed by Algot Ringstrom. "Kenneth Grahame (1859-1932) was the Scottish writer, most famous for The Wind in the Willows, one of the classics of children's literature. The Golden Age is a collection of reminiscences of childhood, written by Kenneth Grahame and first published in book form in 1895 - the book has come to be regarded as a classic in its genre. Typical of his culture and his era, Grahame casts his reminiscences in imagery and metaphor rooted in the culture of Ancient Greece; to the children whose impressions are recorded in the book, the adults in their lives are 'Olympians'. Grahame's reminiscences were notable for their conception 'of a world where children are locked in perpetual warfare with the adult 'Olympians' who have wholly forgotten how it feels to be young" - a theme later explored by J.M. Barrie and other authors." Size: 12mo. Book.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. This copy is in fine condition bound in black cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine. This copy is bright, tight, white and square. The unclipped dust wrapper is in near fine condition. International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased postal rates will be quoted, where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. This copy is from the library of George Darley DSO Officer Commanding RAF 609 Squadron 1940 Northolt & Middle Walllop and has some pencilled marginalia (not entirely uncritical of some of the references in the book). Squadron 609 were involved in attacks on Luftwaffe II/KG 55 Heinkel III who were bombing the Bristol Aeroplane Factory airfield at Filton Bristol. This is an excellent account of the big daylight raid on Filton nr Bristol in 1940, with details of the aircraft units and crews from both sides. Indeed I would suggest this as an idealised account of an action that would be difficult to write today as it includes interviews with some of the crews. Highly recommended. Ref UU 5.

8vo. pp.256 with black & white photographs, line drawings, maps etc. Original black cloth hardcover in pictorial dustwrapper.A very good unmarked copy. "With the British air defence system supreme by day, the Luftwaffe turned to concentrate their attention towards nocturnal bombing missions on major cities and ports. For this purpose they perfected the technique to become known as 'pathfinding', the illumination of the target area by a special force as a forerunner to an intense bombing raid. This vital role was to be played by Germany's best known bomber unit, Kampfgruppe 100. Within a detailed and full history of this unit from 1939 until 1941, comes a fascinating account of its operations over Britain'.
