1st Edition in this form. Near fine copy in the original gilt-blocked cloth. Section of the original dust wrapper mounted to front pastedown. Very slight yellowing to the page margins. Remains particularly well-preserved overall; tight, bright, clean and strong.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 135 pages; 135p. : chiefly illus.; 16 x 22cm. New condensed ed. Originally published: Cambridge : Granta, 1981. John le Keux's series of steel-engravings was first published as Memorials of Cambridge in 184 1. These illustrations appeared at a time when the art of engraving was about to be displaced by photography. The photograph made the engraver's job redundant, but it is thanks to the skilled craftsmanship of the engraver that this record of the Victorian university exists. This re-issue, with text by L. P. Background: John Le Keux was an engraver who was involved in several topographical books including the companion work Memorials of Oxford, whilst the artist Frederick Mackenzie was a watercolour painter and architectural draughtsman who made drawings for Ackermann's University of Oxford and Public Schools, and twenty-four of the Oxford Almnanacks between 1821-1853.
