Has the decisive lsrael victory now settled the problem or does it remain, ominous and feverish, as a possible focal point for the onset of World War Three? To this question The Sandstorm gives an unequivocal and frightening answer. The authors write from the heart of the Israeli establishment. It is the first book to appear by those to whom the affair is a matter of life and death. Yet withal, it manages to attain a remarkable degree of objectivity, and to discuss both the Arab and the Israeli causes without either malice or hatred. The first part deals with the antecedents ~ the terrorist movements of El Fatah (with much new material), Russian policy and its encouragement of Arab aggression, the fanatics in Syria, and Jordan's fear of Israel. A long chapter discusses Egypt's growing confidence that she can win, and another the weeks of Israeli indecision over the necessity to fight. These chapters unravel a complex story with exceptional clarity. The second part deals with the actual fighting in Sinai, Jordan and Syria. It contrasts the morale, equipment, strategy and tactics of the combatants, based in part on the fascinating material provided by the examination of top ranking Egyptian prisoners. The final section deals with developments in the eight months since the war. No such detailed analysis has hitherto been available, one which makes sense of the enormous variety of apparently unrelated incidents reported in the press. The authors make all too clear that the Middle East has become perhaps irreversibly a front in the Cold War. Seen in this light the war ~ brilliant though the Israeli victory was ~ is only another chapter in a sickening story. The Israelis have won a breathing space but, failing a real settlement, the abscess remains unlanced, liable to erupt, perhaps disastrously, at some unforeseen date within the next ten years.
