Excerpted from The Journal of Royal Geographical Society Vol. I. and rebound to stand alone. Captain Phillip Parker King (1791-1856) was an Australian-born British naval officer, hydrographer, and explorer; his father Philip [sic] Gidley King was the third governor of New South Wales. King entered the Royal Navy in 1807 and undertook several exploratory missions along the Australian and South American coasts, during which he recorded detailed surveys of the land and seas. From 1826 to 1830, King co-commanded the British survey of the coasts of South America, including Tierra del Fuego and the Strait of Magellan, aboard HMS Adventure and HMS Beagle. This voyage later played host to a young Charles Darwin, who joined the Beagle's ranks in 1831. King's excerpted article outlines navigational hazards and geological studies, and features a map of previously uncharted inlets, headlands, and bays. John Murray's Journal of the Royal Geographical Society was a scientific periodical that published exploration narratives. It ran from 1831 to 1880 before merging with Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society to become The Geographical Journal, which remains in print today. Theodore "Ted" Benttinen (1948-2023) was an MIT-educated oceanographer and explorer who went to both poles on research missions. Benttinen amassed a formidable collection of books of exploration, particularly strong in Pacific voyages as well as in polar accounts. The present volume was lot 87 in the Sotheby's New York 9 December 2024 sale of his library.Catalogued by GR Murdock.…
