Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 8vo. 176 pages. 32 page publisher's list. Full leather, raised bands, gilt. The re- binding, executed in India, is solid but unprepossessing (as is often the case in my experience) The binder, inscrutably, has bound in the leaf containing part of the preface and the table of contents, up-…side-down, between pages 128 and 129. Nothing appears to be missing apart from the mentioned map. The text is browned and in places brittle - the corners of a few pages have broken off. The scarcity of the book makes up for its unsatisfactory condition.

Contact seller5-star sellerOriginal printed pamphlet of Pope John XXIII's 1963 Pacem in Terris. Boldly signed by Martin Luther King, Jr. at the bottom of the title page. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1954 through 1968. He is best known for hi…s role in the advancement of civil rights using the tactics of nonviolence and civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs and inspired by the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi. King led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and in 1957 became the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). With the SCLC, he led an unsuccessful 1962 struggle against segregation in Albany, Georgia. Pope John's Pacem in Terris was issued on April 11, 1963. The day after, on April 12, King would be arrested for his nonviolent protesting against racism and racial segregation in Birmingham, Alabama, writing his Letter from Birmingham Jail on the 16th. Matted and framed. In fine condition. The piece measures 11.25 inches by 9.25 inches. Rare and desirable. Pope John XXIIIâs 1963 encyclical Pacem in Terris (âPeace on Earthâ) stands as one of the most influential Catholic social teachings of the twentieth century, articulating a global moral framework grounded in human dignity, universal rights, and the ethical responsibilities of both individuals and states. Issued amid Cold War tensions and only months before his death, the document broke new ground by addressing itself not only to Catholics but to âall people of good will,â reflecting John XXIIIâs broader ecumenical and humanitarian vision. Pacem in Terris condemned nuclear proliferation, affirmed the equality of all peoples, and called for structures of international cooperation capable of safeguarding peace and justice.

A publication of 21 Portuguese documents, plus 1 handwritten addition, detailing the first stages of the expulsion of The Society of Jesus, commonly known as the Jesuits. Published by the special order of King José I of Portugal, this book was intended to explain and defend the expulsion, citing the Jesuits' control over the aff…airs of the indigenous population of Brazil (the "Indios do Brasil") and their alleged involvement in the "horroroso insulto de 3 de Setembro do anno de 1758". This September Insult is a reference to the Távora Affair, the attempted assassination of King José I, which resulted in the execution of the entire Távora family, including José's mistress Teresa Leonor, wife of the heir of the Távoras. Teresa Leonor's personal confessor was Gabriel Malagrida, a Jesuit missionary who had spent time in Brazil; Malagrida's tenuous involvement (indeed, the Távora as a whole are often considered scapegoats) was utilised in anti-Jesuit rhetoric. This copy is of particular interest, as a manuscript addition in an elegant contemporary hand has been added to the verso of the title page for document XII, the sentencing of the Távoras, and presents a copy of the speech made by the Judge of the People to the king: "O Juiz do Povo tem a honra de pedir a N.Ex.a ponha na Real prezença de S. Mag. que oseu justifismo Edital foi lido pelo fiel Povo de Lisboa com muitas lágrimas, que todo elle pede justiça contra humatentado de que não há exemplo nage delidade Portuguese, e que para avingar espera com impaciência as Reas ordens de S. Mag; pois todo elle dezeja anciozamente derramar até a última gota de sangue, pela glória e serviço do Mesmo". Recorded just below is the reply of the King: "Reposta de S. Mag.e. Cu não esperava menos de fidelidade dos meus fiéis Vassalos a quem heide corresponder como bom Rey e Pay".With contemporary manuscript notes in brown ink. Each section with separate pagination and occasionally with a divisional title page, bound together as issued. Gentle wear and dampstaining to the last few leaves, lacking the back endpapers, otherwise bright and clean.l Borba de Moraes I, 165. Contemporary calf, gold-tooled spine, marbled endpapers. With al large woodcut vignette showing the Portuguese coat of arms on the title page (and on one of the divisional title pages), and with woodcut decorated initials. Pages: [2], 4, [4], 12, 4, [2], 34, 8, 7, [1 blank], 8, 6, 7, [1 blank], 12, [16], 27, [25], 32, 48, 6, 6 pp.
