253pp. 12mop. First edition. First edition. 253pp. 12mop. An elusive title when signed. Inscribed and signed by Kingsley Amis: "Very good fortune/ Michael Curtis/ from Kingsley Amis" (on the title page) Michael Curtis was editor of the liberal News Chronicle at the age of 34. His opposition to the Suez Invasion led to the paper taking a significant hit in popularity. His attempts to modernize the paper fell afoul of the owners, the Cadbury family, and he resigned in 1957 after three years. He then worked as executive press aide to the Aga Khan, founding the Daily Nation, which played a major role in helping smooth Kenya's transition to independence in 1963. He worked for the Aga Kahn's social welfare institution until his retirement. Black cloth stamped in gold on spine. A good to very good copy, with moderate foxing on upper edge of front and rear flyleaves, spine is askew, most pages of text have a moderate and uneven vertical crease near fore-edge margin (otherwise printed text is fresh and clean), in very good dust jacket. Jacket has light wear at tips of spine (with one small tear), with moderate foxing along upper edge of front and rear flaps, else quite fresh and bright.
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. London: Jonathan Cape, 1968. First Edition. Colonel Sun Markham, Robert [Amis, Kingsley] Jonathan Cape. London. 1968 The first continuation of the James Bond series, following the death of Ian Fleming. While attributed to Robert Markham, this name is a pseudonym for novelist, poet and critic, Kinglsey Amis. Amis was famously critical of the Bond books, penning opinion pieces both in his own name (The Bond Dossier) or under the pseudonym Lt.-Col William "Bill" Tanner". Colonel Sun was serialized in The Daily Express between March 18-30, 1968. The story itself is modelled after the author's time in Greece, with many subtle details that reflect his own holidays and inspiration. Jacket shows minor rubbing but is in great condition, shielded by clear protector. Jacket painting by Tom Adams. An attractive copy. Very Good +.
