Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. AUGUSTE LEROUX (illustrator). 1st Edition. This is a pristine Folio Society first edition of Kim, the famous novel written by the great British writer Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936). It was published serially in McClure's from 1900-1901 and published as novel in 1901. Set after the Second Afghan War, it is a detailed portrait of the people, culture, and varied religions of India. Kim is a boy who grows into early manhood under the tutelage of an old ascetic priest, the lama and eventually becomes a spy. It is a celebration of friendship in a hostile, culturally diverse environment. This copy is 288 pages, on lovely paper. Cloth boards with gold trim. Illustrated in colour by the French painter Auguste Leroux. I think this book may have been stored in a drawer; it is brand new.
