He served in that position until he was elected Attorney General of Maryland in 1934. O'Conor was then elected Governor of Maryland in 1938, serving from 1939-1947, becoming the first Irish Catholic to hold this post. Finally, he was elected to the US Senate and served from 1947-1953, but he refused to run for reelection. "The Inevitable Success" describes "what it was like to be governor of the State during a time of war, and how that affected life as well as politics for a man who set out to be successful" and achieved his goals.
