First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 291 pages. A Russian work on ontogeny and the development of animals. Published in the Problems of Developmental Biology series. *** A later book by Mina and Klevezal, looking at the development of teeth, was published in English as Recording Structures of Mammals: Determination of age and reconstruction of life history. Rost zhivotnyh is rather uncommon, with (apparently) no copies in OCLC or COPAC. First edition (first printing). Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Inscribed and signed by both authors: 'To Dr. Gould, with the best wishes from two deeply impresed readers of Ontology and Phylogeny.' This book was signed soon after Stephen Jay Gould's first book was published. *** From the Harvard office library of the paleontologist and leading advocate for evolution, Stephen Jay Gould. With a tipped in bookplate indicating the provenance. *** Intellectually, Gould understood the true nature of these bookplates, but the book collector in him appreciated them. In his essay 'A Seahorse for All Races' Gould writes about one of his prized possessions, a book from Charles Dickens' library: 'Dickens made no annotations, but a bookplate on the cover, presumably inserted as a come-on for a sale after Dickens' death in 1870, does prove that [he] kept and shelved the book.' *** We offer our Gould bookplates, printed letterpress in two colors, in the same spirit.

Buch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book is focused on the principals and methods of using growth layers formed in teeth and bones of mammals and to make a judgement on essential traits of the animal's life history. Nearly in all mammalian species including man, the age of individuals can be determined from the number of growth layers and, at least in some of them, it is possible to estimate the season of an animal's birth and death, the age of sexual maturation, periodicity of reproduction, certain feeding habits and other aspects of the individual's biology. It is also possible, from tooth enamel analysis, to assess dose of radiation accumulated by animals and human beings during their lifetime. The book is intended mainly for zoologists, wild-game biologists, and zoo-archaeologists, but some of the sections can also be of interest for anthropologists, radio-ecologists and conservation biologists.
