The father was born in Belle Glade, Florida and then migrated with his parents to their home in the Bahamas. He served in the Army in WWII and returned to the U.S. to study engineering in New Jersey. He married a Jamaican woman and had two sons, including his co-author Edmond A. Knowles, who at the time of publication, studying science at Ursinus.
