Insel-Bücherei, Nr. 591. - Max Kommerell, 1902 in Münsingen in Württemberg geboren, starb im Jahre 1944, noch ehe seine Dichtungen über den engeren Kreis der Literaturfreunde hinaus einen Widerhall hatten finden können. Gedichte, dramatische Dichtungen und der Roman "Der Lampenschirm aus den drei Taschentüchern" lagen außer umfangreichen geisteswissenschaftlichen Arbeiten vor, als Max Kommerell, der seit 1941 als Ordinarius für deutsche Literaturgeschichte an der Universität Marburg wirkte, allzu früh abberufen wurde. In seinem Nachlaß fanden sich neben den inzwischen veröffentlichten "Kasperle-Spielen für große Leute" Fragmente eines Werkes im Stil der Schäferromane des sechzehnten Jahrhunderts. Zu dieser in Spanien spielenden Dichtung gehört die vorliegende Erzählung "Hieronyma".
