Kondakov was a Russian historian and a specialist in Byzantine and Russian art and Russian Orthodox culture. He created his own methodology for studying Russian icons, authoring a book simply titled "The Russian Icon", which he intended to be the definitive work on the subject. This book was the result of decades of scholarly research as well as a familiarity with icon painting as it was still practiced in late Imperial Russia. When the book was finally published, two years after Kondakov's death, it became the first monograph in English to be printed on the subject.
