Reprint, stapled. Condition: Gut. pp. 113-122. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication. - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: "I have taken the view that an editor must see every movement of the actors in his mind s eye and hear every inflexion of their voices in his mind s ear; he must, in short, produce the play in his imagination. A producer cannot take refuge in indecision when an actor asks him how a line is to be spoken or how far, and in what direction, a movement is taken. Unless the author is alive, or the text is furnished to excess with stage-directions which the author himself composed, the producer must make up his own mind. Ancient commentators on Aristophanes accepted a responsibility of this kind, and there is no good reason why a modern commentator should shirk it." So Sir Kenneth Dover restated for us the goal of Wilamowitz s commentary on the Lysistrate: "Schritt für Schritt die Handlung zu verfolgen, die sich aus den Worten ergibt." Aristophanes has in fact been rather fortunate in provoking detailed reconstructions of the stage action of his plays from a number of distinguished scholars. I wish here to reconsider the evidence for the staging of the final scene of Aristophanes, Nubes. - Wikipedia: E. Reprint. Condition: Gut. pp. 758-770, suppl. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by E. Chr. Kopff to Jeffrey Henderson. - Lengthwise folded, otherwise a good and clean copy. - From the text: The editing of the lyric poetry that has survived from the Fifth Century B. C. is in a state of crisis or, to be more precise, in a state of schizophrenia. Bruno Snell s Teubner text of Bacchylides respects the division into metrical cola of the manuscript, while his Teubner text of Pindar ignores that division. But this schizophrenia runs even deeper. In the Teubner Pindar, the fascicule devoted to fragments respects the manuscript colometry of the Paeans, while the fascicule devoted to the Epinicians ignores it. Godfrey Bond edited the text of Euripides Hypsipyle for Oxford University Press in 1963 and preserved the manuscript colometry. In 1981 he edited Euripides Heracles for Oxford and ignored the manuscript colometry. In Hutchinson s commentary on Aeschylus Septem (1985) the manuscript division into cola, or at least its line endings, are carefully restored in one chorus, but ignored in other places. - Wikipedia: E.
