Cette édition de poche, publiée à Francfort sous le lieu d'impression fictif de "Virginopoli", réunit deux ouvrages singuliers de l'écrivain allemand Heinrich Kornman. A la suite du texte indiqué sur le titre figure en effet un second texte, intitulé "Linea Amoris. Sive commentarius in versiculum gl. Visus, Colloquium, Convictus, Oscula, Factum Ad. Iuliam de Adulteris". Ces deux textes étaient parus séparément en 1610, le premier sous un titre différent. Le premier ouvrage est consacré à la virginité, avec des considérations sur les droits et devoirs des femmes, notamment en matière sexuelle. Quant au second qui contient, à côté de déclarations des Pères de l'Eglise, des histoires gaillardes, on y trouve des citations des principaux occultistes et démonologues: Aeneas Sylvius, Corneille Agrippa, Mengus, J. Andreas, Léonard Vair, le 'Malleus Maleficarum', Nicolas Rémy, Paracelse, Sleidan, Sprenger, Polydore Virgile, Wecker, etc. Après avoir voyagé en France et en Italie, Kornmann exerça la profession d'avocat à Francfort. Il est l'auteur de plusieurs ouvrages traitant de sujets curieux et de phénomènes bizarres ou insolites. Titre illustré d'une figure gravée sur bois représentant deux coqs unis, présentant une patte chacun, formant un animal double avec deux pattes. The first is to Kornmann's patron, Georg von Hatzfeld, the second to Juliana Morell [1594-1653], a Spanish Dominican nun and intellectual child prodigy who was the first woman to receive a university degree. Usually bound together by contemporary owners, Sibylla and Linea Amoris were originally issued separately. They were published together in subsequent editions. The first discusses the rights and duties of women and their conduct in matters of sex, the second is devoted to rings, including engagement rings and the third is about the commonplace of the five stages of love (sight, conversation, physical contact, kissing and consummation). Kornmann refers to a wide variety of sources, including classical authors and church fathers. He defends women's rights to some degree, but also repeats superstitious beliefs such as that a tree is injured by a virgin's plucking its first fruit. He further discusses incubi and succubi (male and female demons that have sexual relations with humans), astrology and the colour of women's cloths (preferably blue, pink, green and white). Robert Burton refers to De linea amoris in his 1621 Anatomy of melancholy, and all three works enjoyed widespread popularity far into the 18th century. The present edition appears to be the only one with a Netherlands imprint, though a 1631 edition in the STCN, perhaps containing the first work only and giving its place of publication as "Virginopoli" may be Dutch. Kornmann, a lawyer from Kirchhain (Germany), also published several works on miracles.
