This means that, as more Asian children grow up in Britain, ther…e will be more chance to create friendships across ethnic boundaries, at least in theory. However, both Asian parents and young people still face hostility and sometimes discrimination from some sections of the white population, which discourages inter-ethnic friendships. There is a strong tendency to see South Asians in Britain but not as part of Britain. The representation of Asians in Britain continues to be refracted through a prism, which is unable to come to terms with the postcolonial nature of the South Asian presence. South Asian culture continues to be regarded as static, traditional or antimodern, patriarchal and authoritarian. This is in contrast to British/Western culture. Here, the most important obstacle is the idea of Western culture and values as being the norm and criterion in relation to which other cultures have to be positioned.

He graduated from Clar…e College, Cambridge and then won a research fellowship to study at Yale University from 1971-73. He was awarded the Whitbread Prize and the Guardian Fiction Prize. Described as one of the most original 1980s British writers, Ackroyd was compared with novelists such as Salman Rushdie or Jeanette Winterson. Modestly, Ackroyd considers his output, which includes poetry, biographies, and novels simply as 'writing', being the result of the simple creative impulse. 'One can [.] assume that unlike any piece of fiction, metafiction is fiction about fiction, i.e. fiction which self-consciously reflects upon its own nature, its modes of production, and its intended effect on the reader.'.

The decision behind choosing such topic was dictated by the previous interests which emerged as a result of my earlier contacts with the British culture. Various British novelists and playwrights who emerged in the 1950's expressed disaffection with the established socio-political order of their country. Their impatience and resentment were especially aroused by what they perceived as the hypocrisy of the upper and middle classes. They were called Angry Young Men - a journalistic catchphrase originally used by British newspapers after the success of the play Look Back in Anger by the playwright John Osborne. Evil nature of human, religious symbolism and ever-present pessimism. Few novels as brief as William Golding's Lord of the Flies raise so many fascinating questions. Are human beings evil and how does evil arise What is the nature of isolation Why and how do we choose our leaders and what are a leader's responsibilities The list could continue for several pages and still barely touch the peak of the mountain, yet each is a significant one worthy to be considerate.Lord of the Flies, full of Christian imagery and symbolism, in the end has a very humanistic lesson - if the beast is within us we can cope with it. Rather than being under the influence of a supernatural devil - which in fact Golding claimed not to be the force present on the island - we are confronted with our own original sin and depravity. Once removed from the bounds and rules of civilization we have a strong tendency to revert to brutality and savagery. As Golding illustrates with Simon, though, there is goodness within people as well. If that goodness is reinforced, we have hope of overcoming the evil.

But it was all forbidden and what is even worse - it was stuffed between the warped morality of 1950s and social standard empowered by the government, where male dominance resurfaced as if it were reborn in the pure form of Victorian society.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2018 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 5.0, Jan Kochanowski University of Humanities and Sciences in Kielce, language: English, abstract: These work is concerned with the depiction of w…omen in Tennessee Williams s plays.Victims or manipulative creatures Shy and innocent or seductive and well aware of their potential What is the picture of Tennessee Williams's women The author has chosen two plays - The Glass Menagerie and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof to help with analysis of this question.Indeed, a pure rhetorical analysis of his work that does not take into consideration the biographical aspects of Williams's characters and therefore cannot demonstrate the fullness of those characters, it also can it expect to accurately determine the message that the playwright sends us through those characters . What is also typical for Williams's heroines is that they are not able to deal with their past, the problems of their history is growing stronger and is rooted in their everyday life. Consequently, those women of various age are stuck with the life in a state of current crisis. The hopelessness and the mediocrity of the characters in Williams' The Glass Menagerie is caused by a serious breach between the characters' feelings and their ability to verbalize the emotions. The women that parade in a pages of this thesis - Laura, Amanda, Maggie and even Big Mamma and Mae are lacking in almost physical, tangible way something very important - freedom of emotions. Modern woman - an icon which presents self-made woman, are well aware of her targets, beautiful, treating her body as a medium to promote herself. Not so much changed in comparison with Tennessee Williams females. Tennessee Williams women are so strikingly up-to-date with a modern woman. They are left prostrate in their womanhood, unsatisfied needs and desires. They keep on going despite their failures; they have their goals to achieve and ways to do so.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Essay from the year 2018 in the subject History - America, grade: 5.0, , language: English, abstract: Education affects every part of human beings' lives. For the majority of people education level is the factor which decides about the level of inc…ome, place in the class system, and even health care. Without the education on an average level from the very beginning, the person immediately is exposed to a severe disadvantage in comparison with those who receive it.During the process of gathering the materials for this thesis, the author of this thesis has found the most important obstacles in the history of American equal education. Sadly, the problems of education inequality are deeply rooted throughout American history. In the South segregation was justified in the Supreme Court in the Plessy vs Ferguson Case from 1896 which mandated that schools should to be segregated into black and white.Basically, in the North there were no segregation laws, but school administrators consciously arranged the districts with the purpose of segregation. Segregation caused inferior education for Blacks because the districts in which they were taught obtained definitely less money. This meant that the schools could not afford quality teachers or sufficient facilities. The American nation had to wait until 1954 when the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional, and finally reversed the position it held since 1896. By 1980 the federal courts largely succeeded in eliminating the system of legalized segregation in southern schools. The federal government also investigated many northern cities and ordered that the school districts need to be re-arranged so that they can include minorities. Interestingly, the government also, in some cases, ruled the busing of minorities to other districts in an attempt to make education equal between districts. In order to present what factors led to such a situation in American schools, the author decided to divide the paper in three parts - each discussing different period of inequalities found in educational history.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Academic Paper from the year 2018 in the subject Interpreting / Translating , grade: 5.0, , language: English, abstract: The primary aim of this thesis is to present the art of literary translation through the perspective of a book. This book was w…ritten by the musician Wladyslaw Szpilman and depicts his life. Szpilman is a survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto, which is the period in Polish history that was shadowed by the horrors of mass murders both on Polish and Jewish nations.Translation gives us access to the literature of the world. It allows us to enter the minds of people from other places. And it enriches not only our personal knowledge and artistic sense, but also our culture's literature, language, and thought. Still, literary translation is an odd art. It consists of a person sitting at a desk, writing literature that is not his or her own but has someone else's name on it. Like a musician, a literary translator takes someone else's composition and performs it in his own special way. Just as a musician embodies someone else's notes by moving his body or throat, a translator embodies someone else's thoughts and images by writing in another language.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 5.0, , language: English, abstract: In the history of the American cinema, few stars are remembered so vividly although they ap…peared for so briefly as Grace Kelly. Robert Lacey in his bestseller book Grace makes a remark that although famous 'American princess' had spent years cultivating her image of classic, white-gloved perfection, in real life, Grace was surprisingly often reckless young woman who had affairs with nearly all of her leading men' (Lacey 1996:i). A working actor for just five short years in the 1950s, known best for her roles as sparkling although moody partner and obviously for her work in multiple Alfred Hitchcock thrillers, Kelly outwardly came to embody her name with a seemingly effortless elegance and an almost unearthly aestheticism.James Spada, the author of Grace - The Secret Lives of a Princess states that: 'the public image of Grace Kelly - first as a movie star, then as a Princess - was a triumph of myth over reality' (Spada 1987: i). And consequently, one can assume, after a thorough research of her biographies that even though the public was presented with an image of a chaste young actress, often referred to as the 'Ice Queen' (Ibid.), the truth about her real life is far more interesting and has much more hidden beneath. In order to see the true Grace Kelly it is indeed necessary to read the opinions of her closest friends and family as quoted in the biographical sources. Without that, the only image one can obtain is that of thousands of Internet pages dully repeating the same statements about her being pretty and talented, reporting her fairy-tale life and quoting stereotypical phrases.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Scientific Study from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - History of Literature, Eras, , course: -, language: English, abstract: In the development of languages particular events often have recognizable and at times far…-reaching effects. The Norman Conquest and the Black Death are typical instances that shaped the Middle English. In the Modern English period, the beginning of which is conveniently placed at 1500, numerous new conditions began to play an important role, conditions that previously either had not existed at all or were present in only a limited way, and they caused English to develop along somewhat different lines from those that had characterized its history in the Middle Ages. The new factors were the printing press, the rapid spread of popular education, the increased communication and means of communication, the growth of specialized knowledge, and the emergence of various forms of self-consciousness about language.Above everything, however, there is the factor which should be referred to as self-consciousness about language. This had two aspects, one individual, one public. At the individual level one may observe a phenomenon that has become intensely important in modern times: as people lift themselves into a different economic or intellectual or social level, they were likely to make an effort to adopt the standards of grammar and pronunciation of the people with whom they have identified, just as they tried to conform to fashions and tastes in dress and amusements. However superficial such conformity might be, people were as careful of their speech as of their manners. Awareness that there were standards of language was a part of their social consciousness. Most people were less aware that such standards were largely accidental rather than absolute, having developed through the historical contingencies of economics, culture, and class. The following paper has been written with the purpose of presenting the reader aspects of the fascinating phenomenon which the Early Modern English is. The paper will provide the reader with all the substantial facts connected with the topic of the paper such as the Great Vowel Shift, the linguistic innovations of Shakespeare, sources of various words in English and much more.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2013 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 5.0, , language: English, abstract: If we were to ask ourselves who Edgar Allan Poe was, what would we answer The first answer that would enter ou…r mind would probably be that he was an author of the very first horror books. It is also agreed that he was the father of the detective fiction novels. The second answer would perhaps refer to his complicated bibliographical aspects, where historians could only be supposing, guessing and claiming. Some people search for the truth of Poe's death. There are various sources claiming that he died of extensive intoxication; the others claim that he was sober and died due to some mysterious factors. Edgar Allan Poe did nothing to sharpen the blurred vision of his life, quite contrarily - he repeated the fictional stories to name but one - that he joined the Greek in their fight for liberty in 1828. Since no headstone was placed over Poe's grave when he was buried, some have claimed it as to be right of his grandfather, others to the left. As for his burial, both October 8 and 9 have been recorder in various places. No thing can be stated with certainty. Some mysteries connected with Edgar Allan Poe will probably remain unsolved. It is evident that Poe had been influenced by the richness of Gothic literary legacy which was available to him. When analyzing the subject of his writing, form, style and even occasional use of precise motifs as well as tone, Poe proves that his predecessors have had a sound effect on him. However, what is equally evident, is that Poe created the Gothic fiction of his own style and trend, and in fact the question which shall arise is in what ways Poe shaped the American Gothic as we perceive it nowadays.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, , language: English, abstract: Nowadays the word 'Mafia' refers nearly all groups or gangs involved in organized crime. However, o…riginally, Mafia meant an organized criminal organization of Italian, predominantly Sicilian, heritage. In fact, this word is a mere literary creation while the real name is 'Cosa Nostra' meaning 'our thing'.For many years the common understanding of the Mafia was strictly limited by argument on whether there even was a Mafia. In the recent decades that argument was more or less settled, and the principal argument remaining is whether or not organized crime and the Mafia are one and the same thing. According to Finckenauer:To this end, this useful primer to the phenomenon quite rightly tarts with a simple question that begs a complex answer: what is organized crime Sometimes, the mobsters are easy to identify, a collection of ne'er-do-wells with no visible source of income but owning flashy cars and homes; involved in the staples of organized criminality, whether trafficking drugs or infiltrating legitimate businesses. The old stereotypes, which were always something of a caricature, are becoming even less applicable in the modern world. [.]In part the confusion revolves around an understanding of the real nature of organized crime that existed since the earliest days of the nation and, indeed, earlier. It is worth remembering that, organized crime achieves its status not only by the fact of groups of practitioners, but also due to the fact that organized crime is syndicate crime in which certain activities are apportioned out to the various gangs and honored in the main by these gangs. What is interesting, in the beginning and even till the 1950s, many people regarded the Mafia not as law-breaking criminals but as role-models and protectors of the weak and the poor, as the state offered no protection to the lower classes. The question arises, where from such interest and the phenomenon of 'good-Mafia-attitude' within the societies all over the world. As it will be presented within the course of this paper, out of the numerous fiction books and movies, above all, Mario Puzo's The Godfather from 1969 and obviously the film adaptation made by Francis Ford Coppola - were so successful that they deeply shaped a general understanding of the mafia [.].

Its scope of activity involves recruitment and selection, training and development, employee retention programmes, and compensation and benefits policies. No wonder the human factor is put in parallel with the most significant assets of a modern organisation, regardless of its geographic location.

The United States, relatively untouched by the first world war, at least in comparison with the losses suffered by the European nations, also turned inward. In America, the Roaring Twenties were a time of great excitement - bathtub gin, speakeasies, new dress styles, a revolution in manners and morals, the Harlem Renaissance, a golden age of sports, radios, movies, and a booming stock market. There were bad things too, the lawlessness generated by prohibition, the reactivation of the Ku Klux Klan, animosity between country and city, and a resurgence xenophobia that saw the United States slam its doors to most foreign immigration.Toward the end of the decade came the great stock market crash which, although it was not the cause of the Depression, helped trigger a series of events that led to the worst economic slump in American history. Unemployment sky-jumped, production broke down, banks failed, farmers discovered that it cost more to produce food then they could sell it for, and suicides rose alarmingly.Into such milieu came Franklin Delano Roosevelt, fifth cousin of progressive President Theodore Roosevelt, and a man who had suffered a serious personal tragedy when he contracted polio. He overcame his disease and was elected twice as governor of New York and came to Washington in 1933 ready to do battle with the forces of depression. Roosevelt's New Deal was a huge experiment in government intervention in the economy, and although they did not end the Depression, Roosevelt's policies gave hope to many and changed the relationship between the government and the people forever. As the country struggled to pull itself out of the Depression, storm Clouds gathered, as missed militarists in Japan and fascist dictators in Germany and Mussolini once again set the world on a collision course with bloody war. Breaking out in 1937 in China in 1939 in Poland, the war eventually drag the United States and as the democracies struggled to maintain a free world. Victorious in the second world war, the United States emerged as the world's superpower, its first atomic power, and a nation of unprecedented economic might.

Condition: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 5.0, , language: English, abstract: In the history of the American cinema, few stars are remembered so vividly although they ap…peared for so briefly as Grace Kelly. Robert Lacey in his bestseller book Grace makes a remark that although famous ¿American princess¿ had spent years cultivating her image of classic, white-gloved perfection, in real life, Grace was surprisingly often reckless young woman who had affairs with nearly all of her leading men¿ (Lacey 1996:i). A working actor for just five short years in the 1950s, known best for her roles as sparkling although moody partner and obviously for her work in multiple Alfred Hitchcock thrillers, Kelly outwardly came to embody her name with a seemingly effortless elegance and an almost unearthly aestheticism.James Spada, the author of Grace - The Secret Lives of a Princess states that: ¿the public image of Grace Kelly ¿ first as a movie star, then as a Princess - was a triumph of myth over reality¿ (Spada 1987: i). And consequently, one can assume, after a thorough research of her biographies that even though the public was presented with an image of a chaste young actress, often referred to as the ¿Ice Queen¿ (Ibid.), the truth about her real life is far more interesting and has much more hidden beneath.

Condition: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | Academic Paper from the year 2019 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 5.0, , language: English, abstract: The aim of the hereby paper is to present the character of Evelyn Waugh. His career as a journalist wa…s truncated as a direct result of his literary success with his first novel, Decline and Fall. Although his racy novels of the ¿Bright Young People¿ in 1920s England made his reputation, he was a profoundly conservative writer who also had great success with more sombre works like Brideshead Revisited. Waugh¿s attitudes towards the marriage, faith, Catholicism and the aristocracy were very complex, and they changed over the years. I have tried to demonstrate the shape of these changes by tracing references to these themes in Waugh¿s Brideshead Revisited. Brideshead Revisited, as he stated, is the account of the intervention of God¿s Grace in a family. When Brideshead was first published in 1945 it dismayed some critics and readers. It might be shocking that in fact so little they realised what the novel is really about. They thought it an excuse for aristocratic snobbery, suspected it to be sycophantic praise of a small Catholic clique, and condemned it for pandering to an unhealthy taste for miracles. Fifteen years after writing the novel, Waugh declared that he sees many faults in the book and he thought it necessary to excuse himself by the fact that he wrote it seduced by a consequent post-war nostalgia , nevertheless, at the time he wrote the novel, however, he had no doubt he was writing something of utmost importance. Better than anyone Waugh knew that it deals with far more than an age which witnessed a regrettable decline in splendid living. Its major theme ¿ the need to place one¿s relationship with God at the very centre of one¿s life ¿ is something very different. Moreover, the following paper intends to analyse the two approaches to the world of faith, namely ¿ Catholicism and Atheism in order to find the reasons behind the common between 1890s and 1950s conversions to Catholicism, especially amongst the poets, artists and writers.

He graduated from Cl…are College, Cambridge and then won a research fellowship to study at Yale University from 1971-73. 'One can [.] assume that unlike any piece of fiction, metafiction is fiction about fiction, i.e. fiction which self-consciously reflects upon its own nature, its modes of production, and its intended effect on the reader.' 20 pp. Englisch.
