La actividad extractora del látex en la Amazonia se tornó de inmediato en una actividad muy lucrativa. El caucho natural conquistó un lugar destacado en las industrias de Europa y Norteamérica, alcanzando un elevado precio. Esto desencadenó la llegada de extranjeros a Brasil, que venían con la intención de conocer el famoso árbol del caucho y los métodos de extracción, con el fin de obtener ganancias con este nuevo negocio.
