Tras el descubrimiento de América, la Amazonia brasilera se mantuvo en estado de aislamiento durante los primeros cuatro siglos y medio, pues no poseía importantes vetas de oro u otro mineral que se revalorizó en el mercado mundial, generando ganancias y dividendos a cualquiera que se aventurase en este negocio.Desde inicios de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, el caucho comenzó a ejercer una fuerte atracción sobre emprendedores visionarios. La actividad extractora del látex en la Amazonia se tornó de inmediato en una actividad muy lucrativa. El caucho natural conquistó un lugar destacado en las industrias de Europa y Norteamérica, alcanzando un elevado precio. Esto desencadenó la llegada de extranjeros a Brasil, que venían con la intención de conocer el famoso árbol del caucho y los métodos de extracción, con el fin de obtener ganancias con este nuevo negocio. Debido a la extracción del caucho, se desarrollaron las ciudades de Manaus, Belém y otras poblaciones brasileñas, que en poco tiempo y debido a la riqueza que trajo el caucho se transformaron en ciudades.
