Catalogue of a private collection of historic musical instruments given to the Allan Hancock Foundation, University of Southern California, and published in this large-format catalogue in 1950. The instruments include pieces from the 17th & 18th centuries: harps, lutes, pandurina, colascione, guitar, Cither, mandolin, dulcimer, hurdy-gurdy, viola da Braccio, Pardessus de Viole, etc., etc. / "The ERICH LACHMANN COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL STRINGED INSTRUMENTS, assembled over a period of over 40 years, was first started by Mr. Lachmann shortly after he opened his workshop in 1909 as a master violinmaker in Berlin. In 1923 Mr. Lachmann brought the best pieces of his collection to New York, later moving to California and settling in Los Angeles. The collection was loaned by Mr. Lachmann for display at various institutions including the University of California at Los Angeles. The Board of Regents of the University officially approved the acquisition of the LACHMANN COLLECTION on October 17, 1960. A photographic catalogue, The Erich Lachmann Collection of Historical Stringed Instruments (USC Press), was prepared under support of the Allan Hancock Foundation of the University of Southern California. The instruments are kept in playing condition and are played by students in the Music Department. A number of the instruments have been performed upon by prominent artists." Erich Lachmann (1886-1964) was a musicologist.
