Cloth. Condition: Near fine. Signed limited edition of A White House Diary by Lady Bird Johnson, inscribed to Thomas G. Corcoran, advisor to President Franklin Roosevelt, architect of the New Deal and a friend to the Johnsons. (illustrator). Limited Edition. Octavo, ix, [1], 806pp. Marbled paper-covered boards over cream cloth, title in gilt on spine, paper label with title in gilt on front cover. Stated "first edition" on copyright page. Solid text block. Blemish to front cover, light dust remnant along top edge of text block. Marbled endpapers. From a limited edition of 200 copies, this being number 112, signed by Lady Bird Johnson on the limitation page. Additional inscription on the half title: "For Tommy Corcoran - who shared these wonderful years - and so many more - a friend for all seasons. Devotedly, Lady Bird Johnson. Merry Christmas! 1970." An exceptional association copy. Thomas G. Corcoran (1900-1981) was a principal strategist of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal, shaping historic legislation such as the Securities Act of 1933, the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 and the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. Along with Benjamin V. Cohen, he created the Securities and Exchange Commission and worked unsuccessfully to "pack" the Supreme Court in 1937. He left the Roosevelt administration after the second term, becoming one of the first modern day political lobbyists. As a lobbyist, he helped his friend, Lady Bird Johnson, gain FCC approval for her purchase of a radio station in Austin, Texas. He also ensured the election of Lyndon Johnson to the Senate in 1948, by using his influence over the Supreme Court to clear Johnson of charges of election fraud in his campaign for the Democratic nomination in Texas. The Johnsons owed much of their personal and political fortunes to the recipient of this book.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. Autograph; 80 pages; Warmly inscribed and Signed by Lady Bird Johnson on the halftitle. "To Jane Wirtz / with Happy memories / of our 'Whistle-stop-by-plane' / Gratefully and affectionately, / Lady Bird Johnson / December, 1964" Provenance: Jane Quisenberry Wirtz was chairwoman of the national board of Goodwill Industries and worked for various civic, educational and social causes, including Project Earning Power and Widening Horizons. In the early 1960s she was a member of the executive board of the President's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped, and President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed her to the board of Federal City College. She served as a trustee of Beloit College for more than 20 years. Her husband W. Willard Wirtz served with the War Labor Board and was appointed by President John F. Kennedy to his Cabinet as Secretary of Labor, a position he continued to hold during the Johnson Administration. Willard Wirtz was also a speech writer and close advisor for Adlai Stevenson during his presidential campaigns. Three months after the 1964 Civil Rights Act was signed, amidst rising racial tensions in the South, Lady Bird Johnson boarded a train named the "Lady Bird Special" to campaign for her husband's presidential bid in states from Virginia to Louisiana. Jane Wirtz accompanied Lady Bird on this campaign. Often facing hostile crowds, Mrs. Johnson felt she and the President were a part of the South, and she wanted to carry his message to Southerners and express the Johnsons' pride in that part of the country. The journey began in Washington, D.C., on October 6, continued for four days, through eight states, totaled 1,682 miles, and stopped in 49 cities, with the final destination being New Orleans on October 9, 1964. There is a recording of a lovely call between LBJ, Lady Bird and Jane and Willard Wirtz on election day in 1964, with the Johnsons thanking the Wirtz's for their marvelous help during the 1964 campaign. ; Signed by Notable Personage, Related; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings.

Cloth. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: near fine. First edition of A White House Diary, signed by President Lyndon Johnson to his tailor, Irving Frank. (illustrator). First Edition, Second Printing. Octavo, ix, [1], 806pp. Green cloth over white, title in gilt on spine. Stated "second printing" on copyright page. Solid text block, light soiling to cloth spine, a near fine example. In the publisher's dust jacket, near fine, price clipped, bright illustrations, a near fine copy. Signed on the front free endpaper: "For Irving Frank, a great friend for many years - Lyndon B. Johnson." This copy is inscribed by President Lyndon Johnson to Irving Frank, the presidents personal tailor and owner of Sol Frank Uniform Company. Johnson valued his privacy, especially when he was away from the White House and ordered Frank to "stay out of the newspapers," if he was going to be his tailor. Frank provided clothes for the entire Johnson family, members of the White House staff and even a suit for Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt. As the Vietnam war escalated, Frank used his White House contacts to secure a contract with the Pentagon to provide military uniforms for soldiers. The two remained close until Johnson's death in 1973.
