Philipp Etienne was not merely a crude apprenticed horseshoer, however; he was also a learned man. He studied human and animal anatomy by visiting slaughterhouses and observing dissections in hospitals. Furthermore, he followed advanced studies at the Academy of Sciences, investigated anthrax, and was educated in the art of horse riding. He joined the army as a horse doctor in 1758. After the French defeat in the Seven Years' War, he joined the medical faculty of the Paris university. Then he started his own public courses in hippiatry for interested individuals in 1767, and this sparked a debate about the social attributes and purposes of veterinary education" (Jones/Koolmees, A Concise History of Veterinary Medicine, p. 106). - Einband etwas berieben, gutes dekorativ gebundenes Exemplar. Cet ouvrage est "un véritable monument élevé à l'hippologie. Papier, impression, dessin, gravure sont également soignés." Illustré par 67 planches : un frontispice en noir, un autre en couleurs, un portrait en noir et un autre en couleurs, 56 planches (dont 30 dépliantes) et 7 grandes vignettes en couleurs. La vignette sur le titre, les armes en tête de la dédicace à Charles-Eugène de Lorraine ont aussi été coloriées à l'époque. Les planches ont été dessinées par Harguiniez, qui est aussi l'auteur de celles de l'article "Manège" dans l'Encyclopédie. "Les frais immenses des dessins et des gravures, qui semblent surpasser les forces d'un particulier, le choix difficile et incertain des graveurs, les dépenses excessives en tout genre, le travail multiplié à l'infini, les peines de toute espèce, rien n'a pu me retenir" (Préface de l'auteur). Philippe-Etienne Lafosse (1738-1820) fut médecin des écurie du Roi puis vétérinaire en chef aux voitures de la cour. Supra-libris doré sur le premier plat : "Mr. Maximilien de Blangy". Pierre Marie Maximilien Le Vicomte, Marquis de Blangy (1718-1789) a été lieutenant général des armées du Roi et, à partir de 1766, le dernier grand bailli du Cotentin. D'infimes défauts : une déchirure sans manque planche XVI, quelques rares feuillets brunis ou avec une auréole pâle en marge. Les couleurs vives des planches anatomiques élèvent cette édition coloriée à la main bien au dessus de l'édition ordinaire en noir et blanc. Très bel exemplaire. This work on equine medicine and the anatomy of the horse is "a true monument to hippology. Paper, printing, drawing and engraving are equally well executed. Illustrated with 67 plates: a frontispiece in black, another in colour, a portrait in black and another in colour, 56 plates (of which 30 folding) and 7 large vignettes in colour. The vignette on the title and the arms at the head of the dedication to Charles-Eugene of Lorraine were also coloured. The plates were drawn by Harguiniez, who is also the author of those of the article "Manège" in the Encyclopédie. "The immense costs of the drawings and engravings, which seem to surpass the strength of a private individual, the difficult and uncertain choice of engravers, the excessive expenses of all kinds, the work multiplied ad infinitum, the pains of all kinds, nothing was able to hold me back" (Preface by the author). Philippe-Etienne Lafosse (1738-1820) was a doctor of the King's stables and then chief veterinarian to the court carriages. Gilt supralibris on the first cover: "Mr. Maximilien de Blangy". Pierre Marie Maximilien Le Vicomte, Marquis de Blangy (1718-1789) was lieutenant general of the King's armies and, from 1766, the last grand bailli of Cotentin. Minor defects: a tear on plate XVI with no loss, a few rare leaves browned or with a pale halo in the margin. The vivid coloring of the anatomical plates elevates this hand-colored issue far beyond the regular black and white edition. A very good copy. -.
