The author draws upon primary source material to reconstruct the proceedings of the Church's chamber and its interactions with the other two chambers made up of the aristocracy and the commoners. The book begins with an overview of the political and religious climate of France in the early 17th century, paying particular attention to the influence of the Catholic Church. The author then delves into the specific events of the Estates General, focusing on the debates and decisions that were made by the Church's representatives. The author argues that the Church played a crucial role in shaping the outcome of the Estates General. By forming alliances with the aristocracy, the Church was able to block many of the reforms that were proposed by the commoners. This ultimately led to the Church maintaining its position of power and influence in French society. The book concludes by reflecting on the Church's continued role in French politics and the significance of the Estates General of 1614 in understanding the Church's relationship with the state. The book supports the demand of Lioncy firm that the Jesuits reimburse one and a half milion pounds. This refers to the trade actions of Father La Vallette on the island of Martinique. In 1753, without the consent of his superiors, he founded a trading company which went bankrupt after its ships were seized by the English. This in turn led to the bankrupcy of the Marseille trading company Lioncy Frères et Gouffre. This company started a lawsuit before the Paris court, not only against Father La Valette and his Martinique Jesuits but also against the Paris Jesuits. 2) Gazin S. 275 (éd in-4to; Sommervogel XI-1775 (12).Please notify before visiting to see a book. Memoir on the financial scandal that affected Antoine Lavalette, a Jesuit missionary priest in Martinique. To restore the treasury of the Jesuit mission in Martinique, he set up some commercial operations which failed and was heavily indebted to the sieurs Lioncy and Gouffre, merchants from Marseille.
