View on Huis ter Does in Leiderdorp as it looked in 1712.Founded in the 13th century, the castle was renewed between 1400 and 1450, when it was fortified with walls and two semicircular wall towers were added. The castle was sold to Leiden in 1489.After the Liberation of Leiden, in 1591, the castle passed into the hands of Jonkheer Pieter van der Does, bailiff, dike count of Rijnland and bailiff of Leiden. He renovated the family home and also had the first Doeshofmolen built to drain the land around his castle. Eventually, the castle was demolished in 1740, as the maintenance costs were too high.
