En av akademiens 6 stiftare. Under studieresor i England hade han kommit i kontakt med bl. a. Newton och stiftade närmare bekantskap med den engelska naturvetenskapen och ingenjörskonsten. När han återvände till Sverige 1726 meddelade han dessa erfarenheter till en svensk publik (i tryck 1735-36, ?Föreläsningar öfver naturkunnigheten?), vilket fick stor betydelse för naturvetenskapens spridning i landet. Lars Laurel (1705-1793), professor i teoretisk filosofi vid Lunds universitet 1747-82, en originell herre med rudbeckianskt färgade, närmast bisarra, idéer om svenska språket och kulturen. Invald i KVA 1747, lyckades han få akademien att förlägga och bekosta tryckningen av hans ?Förslag til suenske skriv-lagen? (1748), ett radikalt, men förvirrat förslag till stavningsreform. Denna och liknande skrifter ådrog sig rena kritikstormar, i KVA ångrade man snart invalet. Efter att på 1770-talet bl. a. ha tillskickat Wargentin en skrift om en metod att använda runalfabetet vid cirkelberäkningar, verkar tålamodet med honom ha nått sin gräns och han uteslöts 1783.
