### What the book is It?s **Volume 57 of the *Biblioteca de Autores Españoles***, titled: **_Poetas Castellanos Anteriores al Siglo XV_** (*Castilian Poets Prior to the 15th Century*) Published in **Madrid, 1925** by **Librería y Casa Editorial Hernando (S.A.)**. Bookplate. Owner signature. ### What this volume contains It?s a curated anthology of early Castilian poetry?material from before the 1400s?drawn from medieval manuscripts. The editorial lineage is notable: - **Tomás Antonio Sánchez** began the original collection in the late 18th century. - **Pedro José Pidal**, a major 19th?century statesman and scholar, continued the project. - **Florencio Janer** expanded and annotated it using direct manuscript comparison. So this isn?t just a reprint; it?s part of a long scholarly tradition of recovering Spain?s earliest vernacular literature. ### Why it matters The *Biblioteca de Autores Españoles* series is one of the foundational national editions of Spanish literature?massive, authoritative, and historically important. This particular volume is especially valued because: - It preserves **pre?Renaissance Castilian verse**, much of it otherwise scattered in archives. - It reflects **early philological methods**, comparing codices and manuscript variants. - It helped define the canon of medieval Spanish poetry for modern scholarship.

Oblong folio. Half dark blue calf with light brown speckled boards, spine in compartments gilt, titling gilt; marbled endpapers. 1f. (recto title within decorative border incorporating musical instruments, verso blank), xxii (introduction), 286 pp. Engraved. Binding somewhat worn, rubbed, and bumped; front hinge split. Slightly worn, browned, foxed, soiled, creased, and stained; occasional offsetting; first leaves worn and frayed at outer margins; title leaf torn with early tape repairs to inner margin and verso, partial publisher's handstamp to blank lower margin. "Italian pedagogical methods were widely disseminated and emulated in the 18th century, and with the founding of the Paris Conservatoire in 1795 training in solfeggio was instituted as a basis of the curriculum . The first important collection was Solfeges d'Italie Avec la Basse chiffree. ., which appeared in 1772 and saw three later editions as well as several pirated ones . The French solfège tradition has served as a point of departure for numerous methods of teaching basic musical skills developed in other countries, among them the methods of Wedge, Hindemith, Kodály and Villa-Lobos. Since World War II many instruction manuals have been printed in a variety of languages, all of them more or less indebted to solfeggio and solfège ." Owen Jander in Grove Music Online.

First Edition
Engraved plates (unsigned; French school, late 18th c.) (illustrator). A remarkable six-volume composite set, comprising the French Revolutionary translation of Elizabeth Inchbaldâs A Simple Story (Simple Histoire) in four volumes (Paris, An III, 1794â"95, fourth French edition) together with the rare two-volume continuation Mistress Walter (Paris, Louis, 1800). Both works are illustrated with engraved plates, lively depictions of key scenes in the novels, adding visual appeal to the sentimental narratives. Inchbaldâs A Simple Story was one of the most influential English novels of the late 18th century, praised for its psychological depth and exploration of female virtue, desire, and independence. Its French popularity was immense, with multiple editions printed during the Revolution. The continuation, Mistress Walter, is here attributed in contemporary manuscript notes to Madame de Montolieu (1751â"1832), a celebrated Swiss novelist and translator who adapted and extended many English works for French-speaking readers (including Jane Austen). The handwritten notes inside the set explicitly identify Montolieu as the author of the sequel and provide a short obituary note of her death in 1832, enhancing this copyâs provenance and literary significance. Together, these six volumes represent not only the cross-Channel literary exchange of the 1790sâ"1800 but also the Continental reception of womenâs writing during the French Revolution and Napoleonic era. The survival of both Inchbaldâs novel and Montolieuâs sequel in uniform bindings with contemporary annotation makes this an especially important association set. A complete six-volume set combining Inchbaldâs A Simple Story in French (Simple Histoire) and the scarce sequel Mistress Walter, attributed in manuscript to Mme de Montolieu. Illustrated with plates, in contemporary bindings with 19th-century provenance notes. An extraordinary example of Revolutionary and Napoleonic-era womenâs literature in translation, with significant provenance. Good, complete in six volumes with all plates present. Contemporary calf with gilt spines rubbed, surface wear and losses to gilt, headcaps chipped, corners worn. Some joints cracked but all bindings holding firmly. Interiors with typical foxing and toning, occasional dampstaining (esp. prelims), but text clear and engravings strong impressions. Green ribbon markers present in some volumes. Manuscript notes in a neat 19th-century hand add bibliographic and literary context regarding Montolieuâs authorship and death (1832). Uniform contemporary calf, spines gilt-tooled with floral ornaments and volume numbering, contrasting morocco labels, marbled endbands, green silk ribbon markers Fourth French edition of Simple Histoire; first French edition of Mistress Walter (1800).

C., of Erfurt. Part II: 3 plates (1 folding). Part III: 2 plates. Part IV: 3 folding plates (on 2 ff.). Part V: frontispiece (scenes in 5 compartments), 3 folding plates. Part VI: frontispiece (cultivated plants in 5 compartments), 2 plates (1 folding). Each section with separate title-page, decorative woodcut head- and tail-pieces and ornamental initials. Contemporary sprinkled calf, spines richly decorated in gilt with morocco labels. First edition of the most comprehensive and authoritative guide to horticulture and husbandry in the latter half of the 18th century. The author, who lived all his life at Erfurt in Thuringia (1685-1774), describes the preparation of the soil, sowing, nursery- and fruit-trees, the orangery, vegetables, herbs and spices, bulbs, the kitchen garden, corn and pasturage (ie particularly with the aid of fertilizers, so as not to waste time in leaving fields fallow), the hop garden and lastly the flower garden. Part V is dedicated to Ernst August Constantin, Duke of Saxony and has a second preface by Joachim Georg Darjes, councillor to the Prince of Saxony-Weimar and professor at Jena. Part VI is dedicated to Johann Franz von Hoheneck with half-page engraving of coat-of-arms signed by Werner. The engraved plates are unusual and attractive and show methods of cultivation, implements, plants (experiments with new varieties of clover to improve fodder and the quality of meat); in the flower garden, martagon lilies, auriculas, primulas and pinks portrayed in large decorative pots and urns; particularly fine are the signed plates of Part I; the named sites within landscape setting include Erfurt, Hochheim, Cyriacs Burg and Dagobertstadt, while the double-page frontispiece depicts Christian Reichart's beautiful seed cabinet ('Saamen Cabinet'); it was specially made to his instructions for storing seeds, and the elaborate exterior decorations were in fact made of seeds carefully glued in place, rather than carved or inlaid as would appear. In recognition of the author's services to scientific plant culture a memorial was erected to him in his native Erfurt. In an excellent state of preservation. Copies containing all six parts are rare. Dochnahl p126, noting that the work continued to be published until 1819-21, dates it 1753-55. Whilst Part VI of the present copy is dated 1755, Part II bears the date 1757 (though its preface is dated 1752), (?)possibly a printing error; the second edition was not printed until 1765. The author's name is variously written 'Reicharts' and 'Reichardts' on title-pages. Güntz, 'Handbuch d. landwirtschaftl. Literatur', 1897, II, 205f. Engelmann, 'Bibl. Oeconomica', Leipzig 1841, 255. 1st Edition. "Single sheet, float mounted and framed, (21 ¼ x 32 inches). Fine copper engraving. First edition. Engraved by Newton after the drawing by British soldier and artist Pierie. "Some sense of Boston's early geography as a peninsula is gained from a British officer's rendering of it not long before the outbreak of hostilities with England. The view, taken from Dorchester to the southwest, embraces a wide ring of the town's bucolic surroundings while clearly showing its peninsular formation. It was connected to the mainland by a narrow neck that just prevented it from being and island. By the end of the next century, the insular quality of this strategic spit of land had already begun to erode when new routes of access by land were created. As the population increased and space grew scarce on the peninsula, not only were landfill projects steadily undertaken, but Boston's three large hills were cut down to provide the landfill. The hills formed a high rugged mass extending through the center of the peninsula, known as the TrimountainIn this carefully drawn 'Atlantic Neptune' engraving, an image of the Trimountain has been nicely preserved. Visible on one of its hills (originally called Sentry Hill) is the beacon erected by order of the General Court in 1634 to warn the inhabitants of any danger. Known as Beacon Hill today, this topographic elevation, massively cut down, serves as a pale reminder of Boston's earlier humped formation. "In 1773, English drawings and engravings focused on Boston for several reasons. Boston was not only one of England's thriving colonial seaports, it was also the city where disenchantment toward the mother country was most clearly in evidence. The Boston Massacre had only recently taken place; the defiant Boston Tea Party would soon be staged. "The artist William Pierie (Pierrie is presumably a misspelling by the engraver) was a British artillery officer who drew a series of views of the town and environs of Boston in 1773" (Deak, p. 87).
