Alexandre Latil (1816-1851) was born in New Orleans, and educated at Les Ecoles Centrale et Primairies, and College d'Orleans. Diagnosed with leprosy as an adolescent, he married at a young age and lived at a Leper Colony in Bayou Saint-Jean ("Terre aux Lepreauxs"), where his wife cared for him until his death in 1851. His poetry was published in the Gazette de Baton Rouge, and his collection Les Ephemeres, combined with his tragic life, resulted in Latil's significance in the early history of Creole literature in the United States. Les Ephemeres "is inspired by the French romantics, and although some poems express a profound sense of loss and despair, others . celebrate the joy and beauty of youth, however brief" (Creole Echoes: The Francophone Poetry of Nineteenth Century Louisiana [2004], p.99).
