Son indépendance de jugement le conduisit à s'opposer à l'Eglise et finit par le faire exclure de la Sorbonne dont il était docteur. Cet ouvrage, rempli de recherches curieuses, contient l'histoire des écoles célèbres d'Europe depuis Charlemagne, avec transcription d'importants documents pour certaines d'entre elles. Salué dès sa sortie pour ses recherches, l'ouvrage demeura une source sur le sujet pour de nombreux historiens postérieurs, dont Guizot. Papier bruni. Quelques taches et rousseurs.
