According to "The Montgomery Advertiser" of Jun 14, 1904, Picton studied in London at the Royal Academy, then was under the tutelage of "Madame Marchesi", a famous operatic voice-coach, whose pupils included the famous Australian diva, Nellie Melba. The Montgomery Advertiser goes on to report that Picton played the part of a singing temple girl, in a lavish Egyptian-themed party in Belle Epoque Paris.
