NOT present] ; The 1968 second edition of Biological Science: An… Inquiry Into Life (BSCS Yellow Version), edited by John A. Moore and published by Harcourt, Brace & World, was a seminal high school textbook emphasizing inquiry-based learning, molecular biology, and evolution. It aimed to move beyond rote memorization, focusing on scientific investigation rather than just facts. Key details regarding this 1968 edition include: Focus on Inquiry: The text and accompanying laboratory guide emphasized investigation, challenging students to analyze data and formulate hypotheses rather than just observing. Content and Structure: It was designed for 10th or 11th-grade students, heavily incorporating modern biological findings from the 1950s and 60s, including molecular biology and genetics. Reception: While lauded for promoting scientific thinking, some contemporary reviews suggested that despite the title, the text still contained a "good deal of telling" rather than pure inquiry, and it was quite rigorous. Impact: This BSCS text was considered a landmark in reforming biology education in the United States, moving away from descriptive biology toward a process-oriented approach. The book was frequently revised and reapproved for use in classrooms throughout the late 1960s and 1970s. ; 5 Excellent presentation of evolution, integrating synthetic theory. "Marred by progressionist ideology and claims of link to cultural evolution." ; BSCS "Yellow Version" aka Biological Science: An Inquiry Into Life ; FINE. Book.

The text volume is from the Reports of Explorations and Surveys to Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean, Volume IX, and was later reprinted verbatim as the text volume in Baird and Cassin's The Birds of North America, and is identical in all respects except for the title page. The text volume in this set is an actual Volume IX from the Pacific railroad set. Many of the plates were also first printed in the Pacific railroad set or in the US & Mexican Boundary Survey of 1859. About half of the plates were prepared for the present work. Nissen 62. Anker (Bird Books and Bird Art) 22: "All of the plates are said to have been carefully retouched with this edition in view; several of them were redrawn entirely from better and more characteristic specimens of the birds. . . the work was re-issued in 1870 in an almost unaltered form". Wood 217. Bennett 7: "This is the first separate and complete edition, being a reissue, retitled of Vol. 9, Pacific Railroad Reports, 1858". The plates are quite attractive, many of the birds shown with backgrounds, others perched on branches. Fine Bird Books 58. The 148 birds illustrated were unknown to Audubon. The sepia-toned gelatin silver photograph (image size 188 × 137 mm) is mounted on light-brown textured card, set within a slightly larger impressed area, with a single lead pencil line ruled around the edges of the print itself (we suggest to mask trifling amounts of excess glue). The mounted photograph is then tipped in to a pl…ain folder made from a lighter grade of the same light-brown textured stock. The folder is a little worn along its hinge, lightly chipped along the rear leading edge, and a little bumped at the corners; the mount is lightly bumped at the corners; the photograph is in very fine condition, signed clearly in ink 'Stonehaven' in the bottom right-hand corner. Lord Stonehaven was Governor-General from October 1925 to October 1930. He is depicted, standing smartly dressed in Boy Scout uniform, in the garden at (presumably) his official residence, Admiralty House at Kirribilli, with the recently-commenced southern arch of the Sydney Harbour Bridge unmistakenly making an impression in the rear. Arch construction began, from the south, in late October 1928; the limited progress shown in the photograph suggests it was taken in the early months of 1929. The photographer is not credited, but we would be surprised if May Moore was not on the short list of possibilities. New Zealand-born May Moore (1881-1931) emigrated to Australia in 1910 and opened her first studio the following year in Sydney. Working initially together with her sister Mina (who ran her own studio in Melbourne from 1916), her excellent portrait photography attracted a large clientele, especially among artistic circles. May in particular photographed many Sydney celebrities. 'They pioneered sepia tonings, bromide paper and limp mounting-boards. Illness forced her to retire about 1928, but she continued to paint landscapes' before her death from cancer on 10 June 1931 ('Australian Dictionary of Biography'). However, even if the photographer's identity remains unknown, this superb image survives on its own merits as a fitting tribute to both parties involved. Signed by Author(s).
