Hardcover. Condition: New. 4to (30.5 cm). 247, [1] pp. Publisher's cloth with dust jacket. The catalogue of the landmark exhibition held in the Galerie Mazarine of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, 26 March-27 June 1999, curated by Marie-Pierre Laffitte and Fabienne Le Bars. The first comprehensive scholarly study devoted to the French royal bindings of the Renaissance, this volume presents 157 examples selected from the approximately 1,300 surviving royal leather bindings (1515-1570) preserved in the collections of the Bibliothèque nationale de France. These bindings represent the near-totality of those produced for the Bibliothèque royale during its residence at the Château de Fontainebleau (1544-c.1570), under the reigns of François Ier, Henri II, François II, and Charles IX. The catalogue entries, arranged chronologically by reign, provide complete descriptions of the manuscripts or printed books, together with detailed analyses of binding structure, materials, decorative techniques, provenance, and bibliography. Each entry is illustrated with photographs of covers, spines, and significant details. Particular attention is given to named binders and identified workshops, including Étienne Roffet, Gomar Estienne, Claude Picques, the "relieur du roi," and the "relieur de Salel," as well as to the Grolier and Mahieu bindings produced in parallel by the same Parisian workshops. Lavishly illustrated throughout, predominantly in colour, with full-page and half-page reproductions of bindings, decorative details, and manuscript pages. Includes Jean-Pierre Angremy's preface, an avant-propos, chapters devoted to the Fontainebleau Library, French royal bindings, and the bindings produced for François Ier, Henri II, François II, and Charles IX; a glossary of binding terminology; a table of exhibited manuscripts and printed books; selective bibliography; and index of names. A fundamental reference work for Renaissance bookbinding studies, documenting one of the greatest surviving ensembles of royal bindings and providing an authoritative account of the artistic and historical importance of the Fontainebleau royal library.
