Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 12vo full leather binding; wear to edges & sympathetically respined with replacement endpapers; binding tight. A few corners slightly curled but contents complete at pp.347 plus publisher's catalogue. One of the front flyleaves has been removed but good title page with facing engraving present of Hannibal in his tent. Sophonisba was a Carthaginian noblewoman during the time of the second Punic war, daughter of Hasdrubal; like Cleopatra, she was famous for choosing to poison herself rather than be humiliated in a Roman victory triumph. Like Cleopatra, she was a popular figure in tragedies since the 16th century but has become less well known in recent times, although her reputation continued into the 20th century with the silent film Cabiria in 1914. This text by Nathanael Lee was one of the earliest to feature her as a character, originally published in 1676 under Charles II. A 'III' on the spine indicates that this volume was one in a series of Lee's works. This volume also includes Nero, Emperor of Rome; Gloriana, or, The Court of Augustus Ceasar; The Rival Queens, or, The Death of Alexander the Great; and The Massacre of Paris, A Tragedy.

Art / Print / Poster
Vintage US half sheet poster for the 1945 film. Remake of the 1934 Universal film "Advice to the Lovelorn," that also starred Lee Tracy. Both films were based on West's novel, "Miss Lonelyhearts." Lee Tracy plays a radio announcer born with the inability to shut up, both a blessing (in terms of finding fame in the radio business) and a curse (in terms of constantly talking over his singer girlfriend while she is performing). He is eventually demoted to the position of writing a newspaper column for the lovelorn. 22 x 28 inches, folded. Very Good plus.
