Condition: Good. On offer is a super archive of three [3] ledger/account books of George Lehner, Jr. a cobbler [shoemaker] in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. The ledger details George's business from 1868 to 1873 with more than 900 pages of recorded transactions of detailed accounts of shoes, boots, and other footwear sold or repaired by George Lehner Jr., a master cobbler and his staff of shoemakers. Research of the 1860 U. S. Census shows George's father, (George Sr.) age 56, as a "Master Shoemaker" born in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany; George, age 19, as a Shoemaker's Apprentice, born in Pennsylvania. Living with his mother, Elizabeth, age 50, and sister Margaret, age 14. Two shoemakers and a servant living with the family: Henry Keagy, Sebastian Stout, and Elizabeth Beam. The 1870 U. S. Census, lists George, now age 28, as a "Boot and Shoe Merchant" born in Pennsylvania; he was married to Margaret Lehner, age 26; they had 3 children: May, age 4, Charles age 3, Margaret age 1, and George, age 3 months. Two shoemakers and a servant live with them: Lewis Barnaker, Lewis Geotman, and Elizabeth Miller. Pages are clean. The front cover and first few pages of Volume One are detached from the spine.
