Trade Paperback. Condition: Near Fine. 2nd Printing. Corners of book slightly worn. 1996 Trade Paperback. 226 pp. Confederate Hospitals on the Move tells the story of one innovative Confederate doctor and his successful administration of the mobile military hospitals that served behind the Army of Tennessee's transient battle li…nes. In 1864, at the peak of his career, Samuel Hollingsworth Stout managed more than sixty medical facilities scattered from Montgomery, Alabama to Augusta, Georgia. Glenn R. Schroeder-Lein reveals how this doctor-turned-talented-administrator established and oversaw some of the most adaptable, efficient, and well-administered hospitals in the Confederacy. Through Stout's eyes Schroeder-Lein describes the selection of hospital sites, the care and feeding of patients, the provisioning of the hospitals, and the personnel who cared for the sick and wounded. She also discusses the movement of the hospitals and how the facilities were affected by overcrowding, supply shortages, and the scarcity of transportation. Using the 1,500 pounds of hospital records that Stout saved during his tenure as medical director of the Army of Tennessee, Schroeder-Lein demonstrates that Stout was a rarity both in his competence as an administrator and in his penchant for saving wartime documents. She traces Stout's prewar years, his ascension to directorship of the hospitals, his success in administering the facilities, and his failure to find a niche for his talents in a civilian setting after the war's end. The first study of a Confederate army hospital system from the vantage point of a medical director, Confederate Hospitals on the Move offers new information on the difficulties facing Confederate hospitals on the Western front as opposed to the more stable, protected hospitals in the East. In addition, the book supplements previous research on the care of the wounded and on medical practices during the Civil War period.

Hard Cover. Condition: Good. Near Fine. First Edition. First edition. Pencil underlining and marginalia throughout, otherwise an excellent copy. Binding tight and square, no exterior wear. 2012 Hard Cover. xiii, [3], 128 pp. Black-and-white reproductions of photographs and engravings. The life of America's sixteenth president ha…s continued to fascinate the public since his tragic death. Now, Glenna R. Schroeder-Lein unveils an engaging volume on the medical history of the Lincoln family. Lincoln and Medicine, the first work on the subject in nearly eighty years, investigates the most enduring controversies about Lincoln's mental health, physical history, and assassination; the conditions that afflicted his wife and children, both before and after his death; and Lincoln's relationship with the medical field during the Civil War, both as commander-in-chief and on a personal level. Since his assassination in 1865, Lincoln has been diagnosed with no less than seventeen conditions by doctors, historians, and researchers, including congestive heart failure, epilepsy, Marfan syndrome, and mercury poisoning. Schroeder-Lein offers objective scrutiny of the numerous speculations and medical mysteries that continue to be associated with the president's physical and mental health, from the recent interest in testing Lincoln's DNA and theories that he was homosexual, to analysis of the deep depressions, accidents, and illnesses that plagued his early years. Set within the broader context of the prevailing medical knowledge and remedies of the era, Lincoln and Medicine takes into account new perspectives on the medical history of Abraham Lincoln and his family, offering an absorbing and informative view into a much-mythologized, yet underinvestigated, dimension of one of the nation's most famous leaders.
