Mobilisé au 106e RI - le régiment de Maurice Genevoix - le jeune peintre Eugène-Emmanuel Lemercier arrive aux Éparges en septembre 1914. Il est au front dans ce secteur jusqu'au début du mois d'avril 1915, époque à laquelle il disparaît dans un combat. Dans les lettres qu'il écrit pendant sa campagne, Lemercier exprime ce qu'il ressent et ce qu'il ressent est "la révélation la plus complète de ce qu'il y a de plus intime dans une âme de combattant.", la révélation de la tragédie de l'esprit confronté à la guerre qui l'écrase.
