Floury, 1906. FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION and first separate edition of this short story. 8vo - 7-7/16" x 9-5/16". Color pictorial card wrappers with light wear to the head and tale of spine and light soiling to lower wrapper for a lovely copy of a truly lovely book. Limited to four hundred numbered copies, the first thirty-two being special copies which were printed on "papier Imperial du Japon" and contain an extra suite of the illustrations printed in black on "Chine" and two original watercolors. This being copy number XXVIII of the first thirty-two and contains the extra suite of illustrations and the two original signed watercolors of cats, by the French animal painter, A. Vimar. Illustrated with sixty-five hand colored aquarelles of cats by A. Vimar. The condition of the book is NEAR FINE. Only one copy of the first thirty-two special copies located on OCLC/WorldCat (Bibliotheque nationale de France). EXCEEDINGLY RARE; amazingly wonderful.

Soft cover. Condition: Fair. Oversized softcover with stiff, French, boards, with color illustration and red lettering. The binding is a little worst for the wear, with some fading and edgewear. Paper spine is vertically split in several places, and the text block is split into 4 pieces. It will need to be resewen. As with many French bindings, these paper wraps were never meant to last 100 years, but to be rebound by the owners. The condition of this volume will require it! but all the piece are in good condition. Early ownership name in pencil on the front endpaper, dated 1907. Title page dated 1906. 148 pages, printed on thick paper, with deckled edge. 65 charming illustrations in the text, each of them hand-painted. Colored drawing on the page facing the title page explains that there were 30 examples on Japon paper and 368 examples on Arches paper. This copy is not numbered, but is on Arches paper. Wide margins. Text block is broken at page 64/65 and 80/81 and 128/129. Page 128 is toned very brown. There is a charming childs drawing in pencil on pages 122/123. Charming as-is, but can be much improved with new binding. Please email with questions or to request photos.
