Le voyage décrit par le médecin de bord a été entrepris dans le but d'établir une ambassade anglaise en Chine. Les autres destinations de voyage étaient Okinawa, Manille et Sumatra, au large desquelles l'Alceste a fait naufrage. Le voyage de retour passe par Sainte-Hélène et contient également le récit d'une rencontre avec Napoléon.
